BEng Mechanical Engineering at Keele prepares you to design and optimise machines, systems, and products that drive innovation across industries. From sustainable transport and renewable energy to advanced manufacturing and aerospace, you’ll gain the skills to tackle real-world engineering challenges, combining technical knowledge, creativity, and problem-solving to shape a more efficient and sustainable future.
Why study Mechanical Engineering at Keele University?
Mechanical engineering drives innovation across industries - from sustainable transport and renewable energy systems to advanced manufacturing and aerospace technology. It is the discipline at the core of developing efficient machines, optimised systems, and engineered products that transform the way we live and work. Every project you undertake offers the opportunity to improve performance, reduce environmental impact, and contribute to a sustainable future.
This programme is designed to support your development as a professional engineer. You’ll begin with Engineering Fundamentals, gaining the scientific and technical knowledge to tackle complex problems. Alongside this, Engineering Skills will strengthen your practical ability through labs, workshops, and training in communication and project management. Engineering Simulation and Mathematics will then help you apply advanced analysis and modelling techniques, allowing you to understand and present engineering concepts with precision.
You will build a foundation in mechanics, materials, thermodynamics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, and manufacturing systems, alongside mathematics, programming, and simulation tools. Specialist study covers materials and manufacturing processes, statics and dynamics, thermofluid principles, computer-aided design (CAD), energy conversion, and product design. As you progress, you will tackle complex applications, including system performance, design for manufacture and assembly, and digital manufacturing tools. In your final year, you will integrate your knowledge to address global sustainability and efficiency challenges, while developing leadership, teamwork, communication, and research skills through an individual research dissertation and a collaborative industry-led design project.
Located in the West Midlands, a region renowned for engineering and manufacturing excellence – the programme draws on a strong industrial base. You’ll benefit from industry-informed teaching, networking opportunities, and access to practical experience through local partnerships and initiatives. Professional practice is embedded throughout, preparing you for the workplace with skills in teamwork, ethics and communication. You’ll also grow personally through Professional Challenge Projects based on real industry scenarios – giving you the chance to apply your learning and stand out in a competitive engineering landscape.
With an emphasis on professional skills, we’ll support your seamless transition into practice, whether through a work placement, international year, secondment, or finding graduate roles in industry. You can also continue your studies at MEng level for an enhanced degree title.
