Do you want to make a positive difference to the lives of children, young people and their families? Would you like a career in a worthwhile profession that provides varied opportunities? Start your journey to becoming a qualified children's nurse on our Nursing (Children's BSc). You'll learn key nursing theory and get hands-on practical experience in our superb clinical facilities and placement opportunities so you can develop the skills and confidence to care for children and young people with different health challenges.
Course overview You will develop a diverse skill set enabling you to provide excellent nursing care and support to children, young people and their families. Their care needs change as they grow and develop and as a children's nurse you will play an important role in managing their specific care requirements until they transition to adult health care services. Our children's nursing curriculum is carefully designed to provide you with the theoretical knowledge required to be able to practice and communicate confidently and competently, whilst also giving you the opportunity to develop and refine your clinical skills in a safe environment before going onto clinical placement. Fundamental to this programme is assisting you to nurture strong partnerships with a child or young person and their family which is driven by effective communication and respect.
You will develop the skills to enable children and young people to be meaningful participants in managing their own care. The programme reflects the changing health care environment, where services are designed around the needs of children, young people, and their families, focusing on the whole child not just their illness. You will develop into a children's nurse who is adaptable and able to respond to the current and future needs of patients. Multidisciplinary learning We believe a multidisciplinary approach to teaching is the key to developing tomorrow's global health care workforce.
You will benefit from inter-professional education by learning alongside other aspiring healthcare professionals such as medical students and pharmacy students. This exposure allows you to appreciate the role that each healthcare professional plays in every patient's journey - a critical factor for success within the clinical setting. Facilities Gain evidence-based practice experience that supports the ethos of dignity, care, and compassion for patients. Learning is enhanced by our excellent facilities including an anatomy suite and Health Library.
Innovative teaching methods including High Fidelity Simulation and skill-based development in our Clinical Skills Lab. Strengthening your employability Placements We have strong partnerships with placement providers including NHS trusts, and the private and voluntary sectors. An important part of becoming a nurse is gaining real experience in diverse environments. Field placements provide a range of experiences to expand your professional values and nursing skills linking the theory you have learnt in the lectures with practice.
This enhances your employability, increases your confidence, and fully develops your nursing expertise. 50% of your time is spent on clinical practice in different health care settings. Placements take place within a 50 mile radius of Keele across NHS trusts and the independent health and social care sector. You will be supported in practice by clinical supervisors and assessed by a practice assessor, and reviewed by an academic assessor.
This ensures you practice safely, and allows you to learn from clinicians who have a wealth of experience in their field. You may also choose to study abroad through elective placements with organisations like Work the World. Student support There is a strong system of student support for you every step of the way during your studies and clinical placements. Each year you will be allocated an Academic Mentor, who will support you through your children's nursing degree.
