Develop a strong foundation in core chemical concepts, underpinned by advanced mathematics, to explore cutting-edge topics in our Chemistry with Mathematics BSc. Guided by our nationally recognised educators and leading researchers, you'll have access to specialist computational tools and research-grade instrumentation, opportunities for industry experience, and dedicated professional development and employability modules. You'll graduate equipped with the analytical, practical and professional skills that employers value in a wide range of industries. This programme will be put forward for accreditation by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).
Course overview Chemistry is the science which bridges the fundamental atomic building blocks of the universe to the complexity of the living world. The impact of chemistry on modern life ranges from the advanced materials powering our devices, to the sustainable production and re-use of resources. The natural incorporation of mathematics into this programme will not only give you a breadth of knowledge, but more importantly will enable you to fully develop skills in problem solving, mathematical validation, logical arguments and abstraction, key for many scientific endeavours and solving some of the most pressing chemical challenges. Course structure During the first two years of studying our Chemistry with Mathematics BSc, we will support you in learning the core concepts in the fundamental areas of inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry, whilst developing your pure mathematical knowledge and skills to fully understand their use in a chemical context.
Designed to provide you with the specialist skills you will need as a professional, modern chemist, our chemistry course includes dedicated practical and professional development modules to enhance your employability. In your second year, you'll refine your practical and professional abilities through extended problem-solving, report writing, effective communication, and teamwork. Building on your first-year mathematics foundation, you'll take two specialised mathematics modules to apply mathematical concepts to real-world chemical processes. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to customise your learning through optional modules, industry placements, or studying abroad.
In your final year you will complete your education as a scientist, developing a toolkit of chemistry and mathematical skills. To align your studies to your career aspiration, you can tailor your learning by choosing optional modules, including some topics at the forefront of modern chemical sciences research. You will also have the opportunity to unleash your creativity and undertake an individual independent research project and an in-depth literature review. *We have compared the positivity ratings of all participating UK institutions using the NSS 2025 sector data to determine Keele's position relative to other broad-based universities (i.e. excluding specialist institutions and further education colleges).
