Why study BA (Hons) Criminology at BU?

  • Gain a wider view of the world of crime, including terrorism, global human trafficking and organised crime
  • Understand the impact of crime on society and the complexities of criminal and deviant behaviour
  • Learn from research-active social scientists in fields including society and social formation, social anthropology, criminology, cultural diversity and social welfare 
  • Choose from either a 30-week ‘sandwich’ placement, or a shorter four-week placement to provide you with important work experience
  • Develop your own piece of research based on a topic that interests you, or aligns itself with your future career or study plans, in your final year dissertation
  • This course is ranked in the top 20 in its subject area according to the 2022 Guardian League Tables. Whilst 91% of graduates felt that staff were good at explaining things.  

What can you achieve with a criminology degree?

This course will help to develop your critical and focused mind, providing you with debating, communication and analytical skills which can be applied to various topics and job roles. The BA (Hons) Criminology degree will provide the ideal platform for further specialisation in many careers, such as policing and probation services, that require the expertise and skills that this course will give you.

September 2025 entry:

  • £9,535 per year (UK, ROI & CI)
  • £18,700 per year (Int'l) 
  • Placement year: £1,850

Entry requirements

For September 2025 and September 2026 entry: 104 – 120 tariff points including a minimum of 2 A-levels or equivalent. BTEC Extended Diploma: DMM.

Please see below some examples of the qualifications for entry onto Year 1 for September 2025 and September 2026 entry:

  • China: Chinese Senior High School Graduation Certificate (Huikao) average 80%, or Gaokao 61-71%. Grade depends on the course

  • France: Baccalaureate with 11.5–12.5 overall or 10.5-11.5 (international option)

  • Hong Kong: HKDSE Diploma (4,4,3 to 4,4,4 from three subjects). Grade depends on the course

  • India: All India Senior School Certificate Examination (Standard XII) 60-70%

  • Spain: Titulo de Bachillerato with 6 - 7. Grade depends on the course

  • Turkey: Devlet Lise Diplomasi/Lise Bitirme Diplomasi 3.5/5.0 or 70%

Required subjects: All subjects considered.

For September 2025 and September 2026 entry: If English is not your first language, you will need IELTS (Academic) 6.0 with a minimum of 6.0 in reading or writing and 5.5 in all other components or equivalent.
