Romania, with its picturesque landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture, is becoming an increasingly popular destination for international students. The country’s universities offer a diverse range of programs recognised for their academic rigour, particularly in fields like engineering, medicine, and arts. Beyond its educational appeal, Romania is known for its hospitable people, historic castles, and dynamic student life, making it an attractive option for students seeking a unique educational experience in Eastern Europe.
Non-EU/EEA students wishing to study in Romania for a period longer than 90 days need to apply for a long-term visa (D/SD type) for study purposes. The process begins with securing admission to a Romanian university. Once you have your acceptance letter, you will need to demonstrate that you have sufficient financial means to support your stay in Romania. Students are generally required to show they have access to at least 2,000 RON (Romanian Lei) per month to cover living expenses, in addition to covering tuition fees.
In order to obtain a student visa, you will need to submit the application at the nearest Romanian embassy or consulate in your home country, providing the following documents:
The visa application fee for a long-term D visa is around €120. It’s crucial to apply well in advance of your intended start date, as visa processing times can vary.
Upon arrival in Romania, students must register with the General Inspectorate for Immigration within the Ministry of Internal Affairs to obtain a residence permit, which is usually valid for one year and can be renewed annually.
Romania offers international students the opportunity to work part-time during their studies. Students with a valid residence permit are allowed to work up to 4 hours per day without the need for an additional work permit. This enables students to gain work experience, improve their language skills, and manage their personal expenses.
After completing their studies, graduates may seek opportunities to extend their stay in Romania by finding employment or engaging in further education, subject to the country’s immigration policies at that time.
