Sharing borders with Belgium, Germany and France, Luxembourg is a small European country with beautiful landscapes and scenery, and an interesting mix of cultures and history. International students will find Luxembourg an ideal place to both study and to explore.
There are several types of university in Luxembourg, including:
Public university – funded by the government, public universities tend to be led by the quality of their research. The University of Luxembourg is the only public university in the country offering a mix of bachelors and masters degrees to its students.
Private universities – there are several privately owned business schools operating in Luxembourg including the Luxembourg School of Business, the United Business Institutes campus in Luxembourg, ESSCA School of Management Luxembourg campus and UBI Business School Luxembourg campus.
Overseas campus universities – there are some foreign campuses based in Luxembourg, such as Miami University John E. Dolibois European Center, which is an overseas campus of the University of Miami.
In total there are 12 universities operating in Luxembourg.
Luxembourg has three official languages, which are Luxembourgish, French and German. Students are taught this variety of languages throughout their years in the Luxembourg education system, along with further languages such as English. Luxembourgers tend to be multilingual by the time they reach university.

Luxembourg city – The capital city and by far the largest in the country, Luxembourg city is also host to the majority of higher education establishments in Luxembourg. The city can boast of its UNESCO World Heritage Site old town, its museums and its rural setting amongst its many attractions.
Esch-sur-Alzette – Located in the south west of the country close to the border with France, Esch-sur-Alzette is the second largest city in Luxembourg and is host to the largest university in the country, the University of Luxembourg.
There are many attractive places for students to explore in the country. The central region of Guttland, which is a popular tourist destination, offers beautiful rural areas to explore and traditional village scenes, and to the north of the country lies the Ardennes, complete with spectacular nature parks to visit.
The most prestigious university in Luxembourg is the University of Luxembourg, which was formed in 2003 as a merger of several educational institutions, and continually ranks highly in world university rankings such as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
Other highly regarded institutions include the European Business University of Luxembourg, the Royal College of Academics and ESSCA School of Management.
