My name is Ayodhya Perera, and I come from Colombo, Sri Lanka. My primary field of education is accounting and finance. I hold a bachelor’s degree in finance and am an associate member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka. I also have over ten years of work experience in the same field. To strengthen my expertise and enhance future employability, I decided to pursue further studies in finance. Currently, I am completing my Master’s degree in Finance at the University of Vaasa.
I chose the University of Vaasa for its strong reputation in high-quality business education, high rankings, and international competitiveness. The Master’s programme in Finance appealed to me due to its well-structured curriculum, which combines theoretical foundations with practical applications, equipping students with workplace skills and market insight essential for career success.
Although moving to a new academic and cultural environment was initially challenging, I was excited to begin my studies in an international setting. The orientation programme, friendly tutors, and supportive academic staff created a welcoming atmosphere. This positive experience helped me quickly adapt to the new environment and focus on my studies while becoming part of the university community.
The programme includes many relevant and timely courses. Among them, Corporate Responsibility and Ethics in Finance, Investments, Financial Derivatives and Risk Management, Bloomberg Market Concepts, Financial Statement Analysis and Valuation, International Financial Reporting, Corporate Finance Case Study, and Corporate Governance were the most interesting to me. These courses align closely with my research interests and future ambitions. The teaching methods at the University of Vaasa are more advanced than in my previous studies, focusing on critical thinking, independent learning, and collaboration. Group assignments, case studies, and the use of research databases provide students with hands-on skills for future employment.
Living in Vaasa offers a balanced lifestyle between academic commitments and leisure. My daily routine on campus includes lectures, assignments, group work, and research. Outside of studies, I enjoy travelling and exploring Finnish culture and nature. I also participate in student events that promote networking and cultural exchange.
Life in Finland has been a completely new and insightful experience. Finnish culture emphasizes a deep appreciation for nature, honesty, punctuality, respect for personal space, and equality. Coming from a different background, I initially thought it would take extra effort to adjust. However, I found that these values closely align with my own, making the transition easier. I have also come to enjoy Finnish traditions such as sauna culture, biking, berry picking, and camping.
In addition to my studies, I was fortunate to secure an internship at the International Services of the University of Vaasa. This opportunity gave me valuable insight into Finnish work culture and international collaboration in higher education, while also strengthening my career readiness.
After graduation, my goal is to pursue a career in accounting and finance in an international setting. The education I have received at the University of Vaasa has equipped me with practical know-how, analytical skills, theoretical knowledge, and an international outlook necessary for success.
To thrive in an international environment, I believe it is important to start networking early. Participating in orientation activities helps students connect with others and become familiar with the campus and its systems. Being open to cultural differences and maintaining a balanced academic life while exploring the surroundings enhances the overall study experience.
In summary, I am highly satisfied with my decision to study at the University of Vaasa and look forward to building a successful and rewarding career in the international financial landscape.
