Experience our commitment to excellence

Our Department of Engineering is one of the most successful in the UK, and we offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Aerospace, Electrical, Electronic, Software, Mechanical, Materials and Control Engineering. We are in the top 2% of universities in the world, and you will be taught by internationally renowned experts in an institution recognised for its world-leading research.
Our courses are designed with the needs of the professional engineer in mind, and will give you hands-on skills that will give you greater career opportunities in your chosen field. We also have a range of laboratories and specialist equipment that help you to develop your practical skills of measurement and experimental practice, as well as state-of-the-art facilities and learning resources in our library.

Enhance your CV with an industrial placement

“My placement has added a practical edge to my engineering knowledge by increasing my awareness of the application of theory.”
Jiakang Sun, MSc Electrical and Electronic Engineering (With Industry)

All of our Engineering MSc degrees are available with an optional, paid industry placement. The placements will last between 3 and 8 months, and will give you the opportunity to gain an understanding of working in an industrial setting and apply your learning to a real-world environment. Whilst it is your responsibility to find an industry placement, you will be fully supported by departmental staff. This will involve a structured employability programme, which will give you exposure to the UK labour market, valuable networking opportunities and strategies for obtaining your placement.

Study in one of the UK’s most iconic buildings

The internationally famous Engineering Building was designed by James Stirling and James Gowan. It attracts architecture enthusiasts from all over the world, and its technological and geometric character means that you will receive a 21st Century education in a unique learning environment. The building is Grade II* listed by English Heritage, which means that it is a “particularly important building of more than special interest.” The Engineering Building is in good company, as other Grade II* listed buildings include London’s Coliseum which is home to English National Opera, and the internationally famous landmark, Battersea Power Station.
The purpose of awarding a building a listed status is to preserve it internally and externally, and ensure that its character as a building of special architectural or historical interest is not lost. Consequently, you will see a classic 1960s interior that ranges from fantastic original light fittings and flooring, to more questionable salmon-pink bannister rails!
We are extremely proud of our heritage and we feel privileged to have the role of custodians, who are responsible for preserving this iconic building for future generations.

Benefit from our industrial partnerships

We work closely with industry to ensure that our curriculum provides you with the latest knowledge and technical expertise that employers demand. Leicester has become the latest academic organisation to partner with the National Structural Integrity Research Centre (NSIRC). Other academic partners include the universities of Cambridge, Manchester, and University College London (UCL).
The Centre will be a state-of-the-art postgraduate engineering facility, and a number of industrial partners will support the identification and supervision of industrially applied projects. The collaborating partners will provide academic excellence to address the need for fundamental research, as well as high-quality, industry-relevant training for the next generation of structural integrity engineers.
As part of Leicester’s partnership it is expected that at least 40 PHD students in the Department of Engineering will receive state-of-the-art training through the NSIRC over the next ten years.
Students can contact the NSIRC to find out more.

Join our international student community

We welcome students to Leicester from across the globe and you will soon feel at home in this lively and diverse city. We encourage all international students to attend the International Students’ Welcome Programme in the week before the start of the academic year, which provides an excellent opportunity to settle into a new way of life and meet other students. We also have a dedicated International Office who will support you throughout your studies, and our International Students’ Association (ISA) organises day trips and weekends away to destinations all over the UK.
You can apply online to study with us in 2015.
