Why European Studies?

Europe is changing rapidly. Political transformations, social movements, digitalisation, climate challenges and shifting global dynamics all demand experts who can think critically, analyse complex issues and communicate across cultures.

European Studies gives students exactly these skills. Programmes at Jagiellonian University are interdisciplinary and international, combining political science, sociology, cultural studies, history, law and international relations.

At the Institute of European Studies, international programmes are taught fully in English, creating a diverse academic community where students learn from both scholars and practitioners.

Programmes designed for international careers

Whether you are at the beginning of your academic path or preparing for postgraduate study, you will find a programme aligned with your goals.

BA in European Studies

This three-year programme gives students a broad understanding of Europe in a global context. Courses explore democracy, identity, globalisation, European integration, social change and more.

From the second year, students choose one of two specialisations:

  • Governing Europe and Central Eastern European Politics
  • Social Change in Europe

Students benefit from academic English training, foreign-language study, research skills workshops and study trips to neighbouring countries. Internships with partner organisations across Europe help students gain valuable experience for future careers.

MA in European Studies

A strong option for students who want to deepen their understanding of European governance, international relations and socio-political transformations. The programme equips students for careers in public administration, policy analysis, NGOs, diplomacy, media and EU institutions.

Prestigious joint and double degrees

The Institute of European Studies participates in several renowned international consortia, giving students the opportunity to study at top universities across Europe and earn internationally recognised qualifications. These programmes include:

  • Joint Master in Europe from Visegrad Perspective
  • IMESS: International Masters in Economy, State & Society
  • Erasmus Mundus Master in Central & East European, Russian & Eurasian Studies (IMCEERES)

Study Abroad Programme

We also welcome undergraduate students for a semester or full year of interdisciplinary study in European affairs. Our Study Abroad Programme allows visiting students to immerse themselves in European politics, society, and culture while benefiting from small-group teaching, a diverse international cohort, and the vibrant academic life of Kraków. It is an excellent opportunity for students seeking to deepen their global understanding, enhance their academic profile, and experience living in one of Europe’s most inspiring cities.

Learn from experts — and from each other

The Institute hosts scholars specialising in European politics, society, identity, culture and democratic change. Students take part in workshops, conferences and guest lectures, engaging directly with experts shaping current discussions on Europe.

But learning also happens beyond the classroom. With students from dozens of countries, discussions are global, diverse and enriching. Many students say the international friendships and networks they build here are among the most valuable parts of their experience.

Student life: a community that feels like home

Kraków is known for its welcoming atmosphere and vibrant student life. Whether you enjoy film festivals, theatre, museums, hiking, music, or simply discovering new cafés, the city offers something for everyone.

Students can join faculty events, international student organisations, cultural activities and study trips. The university provides academic support services, modern libraries, a dedicated International Students Office and a wide range of student clubs.

For many, Kraków becomes a second home.

Gain experience and build your network

A key strength of our programmes is the internship component, which allows students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings while gaining early professional experience. Internships are available in a wide range of organisations — from NGOs and research institutes to cultural institutions and public administration.

Students can explore different career areas, develop practical skills, and build a strong professional network. Many of our students continue collaborating with their internship hosts, and some receive job offers even before graduation.

Build your future in Europe

Graduates of our programmes pursue careers in:

  • International organisations and NGOs
  • EU institutions and public administration
  • Diplomacy and foreign affairs
  • Journalism, media and cultural institutions
