Oxford Brookes University Business School is a keen supporter of Entrepreneurship, hosting guest speakers, running workshops and teaching the principles of entrepreneurship in its degrees. The city of Oxford also plays host to a range events throughout the year, including Oxford Inspires, an event that aims to bring together leading entrepreneurs to educate students.
Open for business
Former student Lizzie Cawthray studied Hospitality and Retail Management with Oxford Brookes University Business School. She interned with clothing retailer LK Bennett, who then offered her a job where she chose to stay for two years. “It was a valuable experience, the exposure was phenomenal. In my role with product development I was the bridge between designers and factories and getting clothes into the shops.” Both her degree and internship has helped Lizzie to build the foundations to start her own clothing label, Needle. The collections are stocked with boutiques in Ripon, Cambridge and Cheltenham all of which are made in Italy, at a factory near Florence.
Leaders in Social Entrepreneurship
Oxford Brookes University was runner up in the Guardian Newspaper awards for social entrepreneurship. The university has already invested £50,000 in a number of social awareness start-ups run by students. Numerous projects have exceeded expectations and are now annual events, such as The Human Rights Film Festival. Jeff Willmore, project manager, described the characteristics required from students: “You need to be organised, financially savvy and to be able to work both independently and as part of a team – all essential skills for any business graduate.
The Oxford Brookes Global MBA is Ranked 7th globally (QS Distance Online MBA Rankings 2014) and focuses on the skills expected of entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurial leaders are shaped by global connections, collaboration and creativity all working together in commercial practice. Alumna Brook Houchens is a human resource consultant and now lives in the USA. “The Oxford Brookes Global MBA has provided me with the confidence and credibility to work with the senior vice presidents of the firm who are keen to seek my advice.”
Brookes Entrepreneurs Society
Student led societies like ’Brookes Entrepreneurs’ operate to cultivate and encourage an enterprising community for Oxford Brookes University students. Through a series of networking events and talks Brookes Entrepreneurs introduces members through the business process, and advice on how to establish their own business. Current Events Director, Rupert Harvey-Scholes studies BA International Business Management. He aims to drive the social aspects of the society forward and bring more members together through differing events. One recent event was a competition between members to run their own nightclub event in Oxford!
Mentoring for success
Carving out a career in hospitality and events was an ambition for Madeleine Burns, who studied a master’s in International Hotel and Tourism Management at the Oxford School of Hospitality Management. Madeline benefited from the Bacchus mentoring programme, through which postgraduates are assigned a mentor who is a senior figure in the industry. She was mentored by Gareth Banner, the general manager of St Pancras Renaissance Hotel in King’s Cross, London. Mentors give students vital support, with job opportunities and networking. Madeline’s dreams became reality when she secured a placement at The Savoy Hotel in London.
Entrepreneurship is a theme throughout our postgraduate and undergraduate business degrees. While on placement with the retailer Aldi, Business and Management undergraduate student Aimee Ralph used her skills to turn one of Aldi’s struggling stores into a reliable profit making shop. And she did this while being under considerable scrutiny from senior management keen to understand if this would be a realistic strategic direction for the company! “I was responsible for allocations, redistribution of lines, changes of merchandising and price change. It’s quite a responsibility, but a fantastic opportunity to experience different areas of retail.”
