Microbiology encompasses the study of microorganisms, such as algae, bacteria, fungi, moulds and viruses. There are several sub-disciplines within the field of microbiology, including bacteriology, virology and immunology, among others. As a microbiologist you could be responsible for the development of new medicines, tracking the emergence of new diseases, or studying the increase of antibiotic resistance.
Graduates of a masters degree in microbiology have a wide range of career opportunities available to them. These include biomedical scientist, food technologist, marine biologist, immunologist, pharmacologist and laboratory technician, as well as many others.
