Course Overview
The use and value of Counselling skills has been acknowledged for some time within employment roles; these are more overt in posts within nursing, teaching, support work and human resources. Counselling skills are increasingly regarded as a necessary tool within professional practice.
The Graduate Certificate in Counselling Skills programme consists of two thirty credit modules at level six which combine theory and skills development. It engages students in self-reflection and awareness skills and equips students with critical abilities with which to engage the wider social, ethical and political context in which Counselling and Psychotherapy is set.
This course has been developed as a 'bridging course' onto the Counselling MA in Psychotherapeutic Practice programme. The intention of the programme is to combine significant skills training with theoretical understanding to provide students with the necessary tools to apply for the masters programme or to enhance employment opportunities or CPD within current employment.
Key Features
The Graduate Certificate in Counselling Skills offers an excellent opportunity to develop a strong practical skills base, with analytical and transferable skills welcomed by the Health and Social Care sector, Education, Social Work and the Human Resource discipline.
It is suitable for a diverse student population.
Lecturers on the programme are all experienced within the field of health and social care, are practicing Counsellors and are research-active.
This creates a stimulating learning environment that enhances students' enjoyment of the course.
The Course is taught by a mixture of face-to-face learning and flexible learning and thus would attract learners who have significant responsibilities of caring or employment and would value a flexible learning approach.
Modules
The programme consists of two 30 credit modules and is delivered through a blended learning format.
The Counselling Skills module is undertaken as an evening class, and introduces students to the concept of the helping relationship. Students are given the opportunity to develop and apply helping skills whilst maintaining appropriate boundaries, use reflexive skills, embrace personal development and understand the importance and practicalities of self-care.
The Counselling Theories and Human Flourishing module engages with therapeutic theories that underpin the practices of Counselling Psychotherapy. The module explores the early contributors to psychotherapy and moves on to the contemporary field to consider the theories that have developed from, or have offered a challenge to, the foundational work. Humanitarian practices and compassionate behaviour is considered and policies and practices of 'Humanitarian? Care are also addressed. This is an online module.
