About Mechanical Engineering, BEng - at University of Wales Trinity Saint David

Course Overview

Despite the effects of offshore competition from India, China and other low wage economies, the development and manufacture of high technology products continues to be of vital importance to the UK economy. Manufacturing represents a significant proportion of UK GDP and accounts for 62% of exports.

The School has prepared students for a range of employment opportunities in small and large companies. Examples of companies who have employed previous graduates are Corus, Ford, Schaeffler, Robert Bosch and Visteon. UK manufacturing offers well-paid careers to engineering and science graduates. Despite this, many sources document the shortage of engineers in UK industry, meaning that graduates from these courses have many options open to them.

The BEng Mechanical Engineering programme is intended to provide students with a thorough grounding in mechanical engineering science and its application in design and the solution of a range of engineering problems. In addition, students will develop knowledge in a suitable range of manufacturing processes and materials. The programme will also consider environmental aspects of design and technology and will enable students to gain a range of skills, relevant to a broad range of employment opportunities.

Key Features

Collaborations with organisations such as Ford Motor Company, Visteon, Calsonic Kansei, Belron and, more recently, Tata Technologies ensure that both teaching and research is informed by contemporary industrial problems and best practice. Our programmes are further enhanced by visiting lecturers from industry, who provide industrial perspectives. Graduates are thus well prepared to take up roles as engineers and managers in 21st Century industry.

Modules

The foundation year 0 is designed to develop your mathematical, analytical and study skills, to equip you with the necessary academic skills required to successfully study engineering at a degree level. Your academic skills will be developed through engineering relevant modules including Mathematics, Engineering Science, Study Skills and IT, Manufacturing Technology and an Engineering Project.

In the first year, you would study: Engineering Science, Mathematics, Engineering Design, Materials and Introduction to Manufacturing Technology

In the second year, you would study: Group Project, Thermofluid Mechanics, Management Innovation and Sustainability, CAE and Stress Analysis, Manufacturing Design and Technology, Dynamics Control and Instrumentation.

In the final year, you would study: Major Project, Stress Analysis and FEA, Environmental and Quality Engineering, Material Failure and NDT

Assessment

Students on this type of programme come with a natural interest in their specialism and the teaching team aims to tap into this interest so students enjoy learning and appreciate the benefits which an engineering degree can add to reinforce their areas of interest.

The assessments for the programme will be a mix of coursework and formal examination. Modules such as group project and Major project will also have presentations where you would be given the opportunity to showcase your work.

Career Opportunities

Graduates from programmes offered by the school have found employment in a wide range of industries, with roles including manufacturing engineer, design engineer, maintenance engineer and project engineer. Many former students have made significant progress in their careers, with many of them now occupying senior engineering or management positions in their organisations. These include numerous senior engineers, section leaders and departmental managers at major manufacturing facilities such as Ford and Tata
