About Education Studies: Primary, BA - at University of Wales Trinity Saint David

Course Overview

The programme will provide you with the understanding and skills that are relevant for working with children of a primary school age. The link between theory, policy and practice in primary education will be explored, drawing on pedagogy, psychology, and sociology.

There is an emphasis on contemporary issues in primary education, and the programme enables students to engage in small scale research in an area that interests them, as well as an extended essay in their third year.

The programme will explore issues such as:

  • Where and how do children learn?
  • What are the barriers to learning that children experience and how may they be overcome?
  • What are the key factors that have an impact on primary education in Wales today?
  • How do adults work most effectively with children in an educational setting?
  • What are the benefits of a bilingual education?
  • What are the most important skills that learners need for the future?

Also, this programme will enable students to develop key transferable skills including problem solving, team work, communication and critical thinking.

Key Features

This programme is an interesting, varied and relevant programme if you wish to work with children of a primary school age. The programme focuses on the relevant underlying values and principles which are relevant to primary education. It focuses on education in its widest sense.

Tutors have significant professional experience in working in education, prior to becoming higher education tutors, and thus bring a wealth of skills, understanding and contemporary understanding of primary school settings to the programme. The tutors are very approachable and supportive, and the campus is small and friendly - you won't get lost in a crowd.

You have the opportunity to study through the medium of English, Welsh or bilingually. Studying through the medium of Welsh or bilingually furnishes you with an additional skill to be offered to employers in an increasingly competitive bilingual job market in Wales. Entry requirements

Entry Criteria

Typical Offer: UCAS points= 88 and above.

Students apply for the course from a variety of backgrounds, both from A level or other Level 3 courses (e.g. CACHE) or from having left education and wish to return.

No specific A level subject is required. If students wish to train to become teachers in Wales following graduation, they will need B grades in English, Mathematics and Welsh - if they wish to train through the medium of Welsh. They will need a C grade in Science.

The course very much welcomes students from non-standard entry backgrounds, where we would consider experience, relevant life skills and academic potential to join the course.

During the first semester, all students undertake a study skills module, which helps prepare all students for the requirements of study at higher education.
