About Modern European Studies, BA - at University of Nottingham

Overview

The School of Modern Languages and Cultures at Nottingham has a reputation for excellence nationally and internationally, and its teaching and research have been externally validated as being of the highest quality. It is a lively unit, comprising six separate Departments, over a thousands students and over 60 full-time teaching staff.

Areas of expertise

As one of the largest centres for Modern Languages in the UK, the School offers an extraordinarily wide choice of degree subjects, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level:

  • French and Francophone Studies (including French-speaking North Africa and Canada)

  • German and Dutch

  • Spanish (including Portuguese and Latin-American
  • )
  • Russian and Slavonic (including Polish, Slovene and Serbian/Croatian) and,

  • Critical Theory and Cultural Studies (including communications studies)


On any language degree programme at undergraduate level, your third year is spent studying or working abroad. You could also spend a semester in one of our Universitas 21 partner universities in Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore, Sweden or the USA.

Facilities

In the Language Centre, which forms a separate Department in the School, there is a Self Access Centre which contains language learning resources for self-study - books, audio/video tapes, satellite TV, reading, reference and multimedia materials.

The Language Centre also offers the opportunity to students to learn Arabic, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and Modern Greek.

In terms of research and reference, the University Library has a rich collection of books and journals, and contains a number of special collections of newspapers and posters.

Aim

The School aims to encourage independence; active learning, critical thinking and openness to new ideas. This applies not only to students but also to the staff, and is what makes them leaders in their research fields, enabling them to inspire enthusiasm for their subjects and give support to students with their approaches, methods and skills.
