About Bachelor of Music (Honours), BMus (Hons) - at University of Newcastle, Australia

Graduates of the Bachelor of Music degree or equivalent program may undertake a further year of full-time (or part-time equivalent) study. The program is designed to allow students to specialise to an advanced level of professionalism and academic achievement. This degree further prepares students for careers in music as well as providing a pathway into Research Higher degree study.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have successfully completed a Bachelor of Music or an equivalent program with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0 (credit grade average) calculated from;

  • Across the entire degree program; or
  • Across a major in the proposed discipline of study, if the degree program includes such a major; or
  • Across 80 units of 3000 level courses (which must include at least 40 units of 3000 level courses in the major where a major exists); or
  • Where the applicant has completed less than 80 units at 3000 level, a GPA of 5.5 calculated from at least 60 units of 3000 level courses (which must include at least 40 units of 3000 level courses in the major where a major exists).

In exceptional circumstances, the above requirements may be varied with permission of the Head of School and Pro Vice-Chancellor.

Additional selection criteria

  • Auditions - Students who have a performance component in their research and have completed their undergraduate studies at another institution may be required to pass an audition.
  • Portfolio - Students who have a composition or technical production component will be required to submit a portfolio. Please contact your Program Convenor for more information.
