About Applied Health (Primary Care), BSc - at University of Leeds

The BSc in Applied Health - Primary Care is an intercalated full-time course over one year that offers you the chance to follow a particular health interest whilst ensuring you are well-grounded in essential skills for learning, teaching and research. You will develop these core skills whilst exploring aspects of Primary Care and Primary Health Care in more detail. A longitudinal clinical placement will run throughout the academic year so that you can maintain your clinical skills and contextualise your learning.

In order to practise effectively, doctors and dentists need more than just clinical knowledge. They need critical appraisal skills, knowledge of research methods, and an understanding of the systems they are working in. This course is designed to give budding doctors and dentists the best chance to develop these generic skills in order that they can become better clinicians and go on to achieve excellence.

Many of our students go on to win prizes, publish their work and present at conferences and this course is a potential pathway for those wishing to pursue an academic career.

All the programmes in the Applied Health Suite offer the support of a joint administrative and personal tutor team, plus the peer support that comes from shared induction and learning for all students on the BSc Applied Health suite.

  • Course content

As well as following a particular health interest in primary care, you will become well-grounded in essential skills for learning, teaching and research, including critical appraisal skills, literature application and research methods so that you can evaluate new and current treatments.

You will have the opportunity to develop these core skills whilst exploring Primary Care in more depth. You will benefit from an extended healthcare placement to ensure learning is based equally on the patient experience alongside the evidence based teaching of academic skills relevant to all medical careers.

You will be allocated one GP practice, with a dedicated GP tutor. The clinical experience will include approximately two-thirds of the time in the named practice, with the remaining time in the wider primary care environment.
