Overview

Our Biological and Chemical Sciences degree programme is the largest and most flexible entry route for you in science, with eight degree streams available through it.

Our programme is carefully constructed to foster an interdisciplinary approach across a wide range of biological, biotechnology, medical, chemical and pharmaceutical research areas.

If you enjoy Biology and/or Chemistry as Leaving Certificate subjects, enjoy working in a laboratory environment and like the challenge and excitement of scientific research and development, then Biological and Chemical Sciences, with its broad range of opportunities, may be the CAO entry route for you.

Year 1 Modules:

BL1002Cell, Biomolecules, Genetics and Evolution (5 credits);

BC1001Introduction to Biochemistry and the Biological Basis of Disease (5 credits);

BL1004Physiology and Structure of Plants and Animals (5 credits);

MB1003Microbiology in Society (5 credits);

CM1200Fundamentals of Modern Chemistry 1 (10 credits);

MA1001 & MA1002Calculus for Science I & II (5 credits each);

PY1010Physics for Biological and Chemical Sciences (10 credits)

Electives

BL1005Introduction to Ecology (5 credits);

BT1001Biotechnology (5 credits);

CM1201Fundamentals of Modern Chemistry 2a (10 credits)

Years 2, 3 & 4 Modules:

Students select one degree stream (depending on choice of Year 1 Electives) from:

Applied Plant Biology,Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Chemistry of Pharmaceutical Compounds, Chemistry with Forensic Science, Science Education (Chemistry or Biology Route), Microbiology, Neuroscience, Physiology

Costs: Full-time EU/EEA/Swiss State undergraduate students may be exempt from paying tuition fees. The State will pay the tuition fees for students who satisfy the Free Fees Criteria. In 2016/17 the Student Contribution Charge will be EUR 3,000 and the Capitation Fee will be EUR 165.

2017 Entry Requirements: H5 in two subjects and O6/H7 in four other subjects in the Leaving Certificate from Irish, English, Mathematics, one Laboratory Science subject (Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Physics with Chemistry (joint) or Agricultural Science) and two other subjects recognised for entry purposes. Special Entry Requirement: H4 in a Laboratory Science subject or Mathematics or Applied Mathematics.

Entry Points: 2016: 480. Points may vary from year to year.

Course Practicalities

This course comprises a combination of lectures, practicals (experiments) and tutorials/workshops.

Assessment

Written exams will take place before Christmas and in May. Not all modules will have formal examinations. Many modules use other types of assessment. Laboratory work and practical aspects of the course are also assessed on an ongoing basis via laboratory reports etc., while homework assignments are also assessed in a number of modules.

Application Procedure

EU Applicants: Application to Year 1 of the degree programme is made directly through the Central Applications Office (CAO). Applicants should apply online at www.cao.ie. The normal closing date for receipt of completed applications is 1st February of the year of entry.

Non-EU Applicants

Mature Applicants: Application is made through theCAO and the closing date for receipt of completed applications is 1st February of the year of proposed entry.
