About Digital Media Production, BA (Hons) - at Sheffield Hallam University

The rapid development of new technologies has fuelled expansion of the media industry, presenting new and exciting opportunities for creative practice in digital media. Digital media technologies are converging through continuing developments in digital TV, the internet, games, streaming media, advertising and portable entertainment. This is increasing the need for stimulating and innovative creative media content. This course equips you with the skills and knowledge to design and produce new media products. You learn how to use the latest digital media software such as Adobe CS4 (Flash, After Effects, Dreamweaver and Premiere), Final Cut Pro and audio editing. We have Apple Mac suites to develop your software skills, enabling you to become confident in expressing your creative ideas. As well as gaining confidence in digital media software, you learn to manage creative teams successfully. Throughout the course, you design and produce new media products and work on multidisciplinary projects in film, animation and games. These projects also improve your project management, interpersonal and communication skills. To engage fully with the production process, the course develops your ability to assess new technologies and emerging platforms, such as interactive TV, games devices, mobile, streaming media, web 2.0 and Wi-Fi networks. Understanding new technologies and their potential helps you to spot new opportunities to create exciting and innovative digital media. You can take a one year paid work placement in a creative media practice company. We help you to gain a suitable placement, and visit you while you are there to ensure it is a valuable learning experience. Our teaching is informed by current critical theory and encourages you to continuously evaluate your work, as well as your personal development. As you progress you build a portfolio of work, enabling you to showcase your skills to potential clients and employers. You graduate from this course with the software skills, project management experience and new media technology knowledge to take advantage of the tremendous growth in digital media and creative arts industries. All students attend a selection event with a portfolio of work to demonstrate their ability. Provided you meet our minimum entry requirements, we base our offer on your application, interview and work portfolio.
