About Agroecology and Sustainable Management in Agriculture, MSc, PG Dip, Postgraduate Certificate - at Harper Adams University

Agroecology and Sustainable Management is at the heart of a changing food system - reconnecting farming with nature, supporting thriving rural communities, and creating sustainable ways to feed a growing world.

On this course, you’ll study how ecological science, regenerative practices and social innovation can be brought together to shape the future of agriculture. You’ll explore how farming can work with natural systems — restoring soil health, enhancing biodiversity, and building resilience to climate change — while also supporting farmers’ livelihoods and global food security.

You’ll also look beyond the farm gate — examining the wider economic, social and policy contexts that drive change in food and farming systems, and learning how agroecology can contribute to a fairer, more sustainable future.

Learning is practical and applied from day one. Working across our commercial farm, research projects and specialist agroecology sites, you’ll develop hands-on skills, apply ecological principles in real-world settings, and engage with the challenges and opportunities facing the sector.

When you graduate, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge, skills and practical experience to make a real impact — whether working on farms, in advisory roles, in research, or helping to shape policy and sustainable food systems around the world. Find out more about your future career opportunities.

Why study Agroecology?

1. A systems-based approach to sustainable farming

Explore the connections between ecology, food production and rural livelihoods — understanding how farms function as part of wider environmental and social systems.

2. Hands-on learning across real-world settings

From crop trials and paludiculture to strip cropping and regenerative rotations, you’ll gain practical experience through research-led teaching on our commercial farm and specialist agroecology sites.

3. Built for flexibility - designed for impact

With a block teaching model, early timetable access and two intake points per year, the course is shaped to fit around working professionals, career changers and those looking to study part-time.

4. International opportunities with a global outlook

Agroecology is a global movement. Explore the international context throughout your modules, with the option to undertake a field-based project overseas, from Southern Africa to Europe.

"Studying MSc Agroecology at Harper Adams University is one of the best things I have ever done. It has enabled my desired career change and my dream to come true - I now have a job with a global NGO that empowers farmers to implement integrated farm management and agroecology.  It is a thrill to be taught by lecturers who are so knowledgeable and actively contribute to high-level, evidence-based scientific literature.  I highly recommend studying MSc Agroecology at Harper Adams, to empower yourself and become part of the industry to promote biodiversity and help advance sustainable, regenerative agriculture."
