About Writing & Directing, BA, Diploma - at Collarts

Are you a born storyteller? Our Writing & Directing course is designed for those who can’t wait to write, direct, and create original work for the stage - or breathe new life into contemporary texts and the classics.  

Our experienced lecturers, who are currently working in the industry as writers, directors, and award-winning theatre artists, will help you to find your voice and shape your own unique style.

This comprehensive course covers directing and production, theatre studies and dramaturgy, playwriting workshops and script assessing - helping you to build an in-depth knowledge of both writing and bringing a script to life as a director, while laying the blueprint for character, action, performance and production. Learn techniques in rehearsal room practices, directing actors, working with designers, guiding technicians in world-building and bringing transformative stories to life. 

Our courses are made to help make you career-ready with pitching and grant writing, and you’ll have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in sought-after industry placements. You’ll also collaborate with students from other courses to develop a well-rounded understanding of the arts and entertainment industries, and build valuable creative connections to become the theatre-maker of the future.

Entry requirements

Collarts is a place where performance, passion, and industry knowledge collide. We're not just looking for students; we're on the lookout for future playwrights and directors. To see if you are one of them, you’ll need to attend an admissions interview and a group audition to talk about your experience, background, and interest in the course and industry.

The group audition is an opportunity to get to know you and for the you to experience the environment and teaching style at Collarts. During the group audition, you will be asked to give a short presentation (no more than 3 minutes) describing either:

a) Your interests in the chosen degree and any theatrical experiences that have inspired you OR
b) Your response to a piece of theatrical text (options will be provided)

English language requirements

Our English requirement is an overall IELTS score of 6.0 or equivalent (with no single band score below 6.0) for all the courses, except Entertainment Journalism, where students are required to have an overall IELTS score of 6.5 (with no single band score below 6.0).

Applicants may also provide the following as evidence of their English proficiency:

  • Results of English subjects in a range of countries’ secondary school certificate, A Level or the International Baccalaureate. Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions.
  • Successful completion of an English course at any of our pathway providers.
