About Music Performance, BA, Diploma - at Collarts

If you dream of a career as a SongwriterRecording ArtistSession Musician, or if you want to work as a Music DirectorComposerMusic Teacher or Music Arranger, this course is for you.

The Music Performance degree balances creative, technical and industry-related skills, with a focus on contemporary music performance and songwriting.

Working closely with our ARIA award-winning teaching staff plus a wide range of industry professionals, you will extensively develop your ability in solo and collaborative music performancemusic analysissongwriting and technical musicianship.

Music Performance students choose one area of specialisation: vocal, instrumental or songwriting. All students are mentored in this specialisation by industry experts and also receive a one-on-one weekly lesson in their main instrument. You will also work alongside students from other courses to gain a well-rounded understanding of processes involved in the music industry.

Collarts offers students a variety of real-life industry experiences so that they are career-ready when they graduate. Through our industry partnerships, students have opportunities to partake in a variety of real-world business experiences, gaining access to industry connections.

Students will graduate with a well-rounded understanding of music performance and songwriting, both in Australia and overseas.

Entry requirements

Students must first meet the general entry requirements before progressing to the interview stage and meeting additional specific course entry requirements.

All international student applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of commencement of study.

The academic minimum entry requirement is one of the following:

  • Completion of an Australian Year 12 Senior Secondary Certificate of Education or overseas equivalent
  • International Baccalaureate
  • Completed Australian AQF (Australian Qualifications Framework) Certificate IV
  • Completed Foundation year at any Australian Higher Education Provider
  • Completed one full-time semester at any Australian Higher Education Provider
  • Completed one full-time year at an overseas Higher Education Provider.

Meet the minimum English proficiency requirements evidenced by achieving an IELTS 6.0 (no band lower than 6.0) or equivalent

  • Applicants who do not meet the minimum English Proficiency Levels can take an intensive English course to gain the required level of proficiency at one of Collarts’ pathway provider partners.
  • All documents must be certified and translated (if originals are not in English).

Interview applicable to all courses

Audition

  • For Vocal and Instrumentalist: Prepare two contrasting pieces with your primary instrument (eg. one jazz and one rock song).
  • For the songwriting stream: two original pieces must be played.
