There are 22 universities that are granted the ability to award degree in Hong Kong, and they fall into the following categories:

Universities funded by the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong

There are 8 universities that are financed by Hong Kong, including the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Self funded universities

There are several universities that do not receive funding from Hong Kong, including the Education University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Metropolitan University.

Language of tuition

The official languages of Hong Kong are Chinese and English, whilst Cantonese, which is a variety of the Chinese language, is the most widely spoken language.

Courses at institutions in Hong Kong are typically taught in Cantonese, but many universities also offer courses taught in English, such as the Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design, which offers several bachelors, masters and PhD courses taught in English.
