Universities in Ghana

There are just under 110 universities and colleges in Ghana with the ability to award degrees. These can be divided into the following categories:

Public universities and technical universities

Public universities in Ghana are funded by the state, and often provide a comprehensive range of education subjects at bachelors, masters and doctoral levels. Examples include the University of Ghana, which was established in 1948 in Accra, and as such is the oldest university in Ghana, and also the University of Cape Coast.

Public professional institutions

Public professional institutes in Ghana are funded by the state, and offer degree courses focused on specific areas of education. Examples include the University of Media Arts and Communication, the Ghana Institute of Languages and the University of Professional Studies, Accra.

Private universities and university colleges

Private universities and colleges in Ghana do not receive public funding, but offer students courses in a wide variety of subject areas across many study levels.

Private universities include Central University, which is based in Accra, and Valley View University, which is based in Oyibi, just north of Accra.

Educational institutions with affiliations to larger universities or foreign universities.

These tend to be smaller universities, and they are usually affiliated to larger public universities, or universities abroad.

Examples of these types of institutions affiliated with larger Ghanaian public universities include the Accra Institute of Technology, which is affiliated with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and the Ghana Baptist University College, which is affiliated with the University of Cape Coast.

An example of a Ghanaian university that is affiliated with a foreign university is Webster University Ghana Campus, which is a Ghanaian campus of Webster University, in the USA.
