Masters in Germany

There are many masters courses available for international students across a large selection of institutions in Germany.

Germany is known for its high-quality education system and hosts a range of institutions, including universities of applied sciences (UAS) and technical universities known for their engineering and technological programs, traditional universities that provide courses in arts, sciences, and humanities, and specialised institutions that focus on specific fields such as business or social sciences.

These institutions offer a diverse array of masters degrees, such as Master of Science (MSc), Master of Arts (MA), Master of Engineering (MEng), Master of Business Administration (MBA), among others.

Duration

The duration of postgraduate degrees in Germany typically spans between one to two years for taught degrees. Research-based degrees, such as a Master of Research (MRes), might take longer than two years, depending on the nature and scope of the research work.

Language of Teaching

Whilst German is the primary language of teaching in many programs, a large number of English-taught masters degrees are available, designed to cater to international students. The availability of English-taught programmes varies depending on the field of study and the institution.

How to Apply for a Masters Degree in Germany

International students can apply directly to each institution through the university’s official website or through platforms such as Uni-Assist, a centralised admission portal for international students. The application documents usually required include a personal statement, a Curriculum Vitae (CV), academic transcripts, and letters of recommendation.

Proof of language proficiency is essential, with TestDaF or DSH scores required for German-taught programs and IELTS or TOEFL scores for English-taught programs. Some subjects may also require specific academic backgrounds or entrance examinations.

Postgraduate Tuition Fees for International Students

Germany is known for its low tuition fees for higher education. Many public universities in Germany charge no tuition fees for masters degrees, especially for EU/EEA students. A nominal semester fee is often required, covering administrative costs and student services.

Non-EU/EEA students might be required to pay tuition fees at certain institutions, particularly in the state of Baden-Württemberg, but these fees are generally much lower than in other popular study destinations. Various scholarships are available for both EU/EEA and non-EU/EEA students, which can help in covering living expenses and any tuition fees that might apply.
