Why choose a UK university in China?

University of Nottingham Ningbo China students’ Ayush Poddar (Indian) and MinYoung You explain why they decided to study at the University of Nottingham in China.

The University of Nottingham is ranked in the top 10 UK instiutions, in the top 1% worldwide and has campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia.
I’m Ayush Poddar from India, studying at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China and majoring in Finance, Accounting & Management (FAM). When I thought about choosing a degree in 2010, I wanted to go to the United Kingdom and a well ranked university. That’s when I found the University of Nottingham. Exploring the web pages I was intrigued to see that they also had a university in China! Importantly, I found out that the courses are the same, taught in English and I’d get a UK, University of Nottingham degree. In fact it would be the best of both worlds – a British Education in China.

Many people go to the US, UK, Singapore and Australia to study, but not many Indians go to China. I remember my friends telling me, “Ayush, you’re crazy to go to China!” But today I believe I made the right decision as it’s something quite different and this will help in terms of my career prospects. The cost of living is low, I learn Chinese and I study in a multicultural environment with friends from over 45 different countries; Chinese, British, German, Russian, Kazakh, Korean, Brazilian, American, Swedish, Indian and many more!

The exposure that we get in this part of the world is extraordinary and the bold step I made a year ago has really developed me as an individual. This is one place where you don’t need to look for opportunities; they come and find you: all you need to do is grasp them. I have no doubt that my time in China will give me:

  • Greater employment opportunities
  • A brilliant cultural experience and a chance to explore Asia!
  • Important exposure to the world’s fastest growing economy
  • Lots of new friends

My name is MinYoung You from Seoul, South Korea. I’m a third year student at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, majoring in International Business with Chinese. I completed 4 years of studying in the U.S. before coming to China and during my last year in the states, I realised the significance of learning Chinese culture and language for my future. After deciding to go to China, I researched universities and found an ideal school, the University of Nottingham Ningbo China! Choosing UNNC was like killing three birds in one stone; studying at one of the top English universities, while learning about China and establishing connections from all over the world.

UNNC offers various opportunities for students through its partnerships. Last summer I took part in a University organized internship. It was with Chinese and American companies and took place in Hong Kong/Ningbo/Beijing. Moreover, students have the great option of studying abroad for a semester or a whole year, at partner universities across the world; I will be going on exchange to the Nottingham UK campus next January.

The campus is in Ningbo. It’s a fast developing International city with a cool mix of modernity and tradition. It is over 7,000 years old and the population is about 6 million. I’ve been living in Ningbo little over a year now and connecting with various people has been really fascinating. Student life and my experiences in China and at UNNC, have certainly broadened my horizons. I hope that many students will get to experience the same and more!
