Artificial intelligence (AI) is a relatively new degree subject. With the rise of artificial intelligence, and the prominence of new technology, education is becoming increasingly important. A degree in artificial intelligence would allow you to be prepared to work in an area of computer science that is only going to become more utilised and improved.
It is common for artificial intelligence to be offered as a joint honours degree alongside a more generic computer science degree. This format ensures that you have a foundation of computer science knowledge, as well as having specialist knowledge in artificial intelligence.
You will study modules in computer programming, software engineering, artificial intelligence and machine learning. Your degree will likely be delivered in a mixture of modes. These will include lectures and seminars, as well as practical projects and computer laboratory work.
Depending on where you choose to study, you may be able to specialise towards the end of your degree programme. This specialisation can influence what area you choose to work in after you have graduated. Common specialisations include:

The accreditation of your degree will depend on where you choose to study, as well as your specific course. It is most common to be awarded a Bachelor of Science (BSc), but some courses may award a Bachelor of Computing (BComp), or a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng).
You may also be able to earn specialist professional qualifications throughout your degree and when you are working post-graduation.
Typically, an undergraduate degree in artificial intelligence will take three to four years. Foundation degrees, diplomas and certificates can last up to two years when studied full-time.
On successful completion of your studies, you can either choose to seek employment in your chosen area, or further your studies. Continuation of your studies can come in the form of a postgraduate degree, such as a masters or PhD, or a graduate diploma or certificate.
Artificial intelligence is a subject that will be useful in many industries. The wide range of transferable skills gained throughout your degree will mean that you will be able to find work in different areas. You may go on to work as a games developer, or a robotic scientist. If you have a good knowledge of computer science, you could gain work in a more generic role, such as computer programming or software engineering.
