Medical Sciences offers a solid foundation in core biomedical subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and neuroscience, and is ideal for people with a broad interest in the science of human beings, from the level of molecules and cells to individuals.
This course is ideal for those who can see themselves in a career related to healthcare, medical research, or even management of health organisations. As well as offering the chance to apply for postgraduate medical or dental qualifications, you will also leave with a very strong portfolio of transferable skills ideal for the graduate job market.
Our medical sciences degree offers a very flexible programme in which you can tailor your degree to your interests. Our facilities, including an environmental suite and a dissection room, allow our students to truly explore the way the human body functions both normally and in extreme conditions.
The course provides a solid foundation in core biomedical subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and neuroscience. There is also the opportunity to study in selected areas such as microbiology.
All our degree programmes allow you to undertake a placement year and study abroad year as part of your degree.
Accreditation
This programme has been awarded Full Advanced Accreditation by the Royal Society of Biology. Degree accreditation by the Royal Society of Biology acknowledges academic excellence in the biosciences, and highlights degrees that educate the research and development leaders and innovators of the future. The accreditation criteria require evidence that graduates have met defined learning outcomes, including gaining substantial research experience.
Course content
Year one will introduce you to the broad range of topics that makes up medical sciences, including anatomy, physiology and neuroscience. On top of this you will also develop a foundation of laboratory skills and techniques that will be vital throughout your degree.
Through modules around topics such as neurobiology and the physiology of absorption and excretion, you will receive more exposure to the systems of the body. The course is taught in a way that integrates your understanding of the normal structure and function of the body with changes in disease and treatment. There is also a chance to participate in a study year abroad or an industrial placement at the end of year two to further enhance your skills.
Year three of the MBiol will prepare your for Master's level, through a research preparation module and a group or individual research project, alongside level 3 modules. In year four you will have the opportunity to undertake an extended research project in a completely original topic, alongside the chance to explore our latest research breakthroughs with leading academics.

Entry requirements
A-level: AAA
Including Biology/Human Biology, or Chemistry plus another science or science-related subject. Critical Thinking and General Studies excluded.
We accept the following science subjects: biology, human biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics. Science- related subjects: geography, PE, psychology, use of maths and statistics.
GCSE: Typically Grade 6 (B) or above at GCSE Maths and Grade 4 (C) or above at GCSE English.

Number 1 for employability - the Faculty of Biological Sciences is ranked highest for employability amongst Russell Group universities. Higher than Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Durham, Edinburgh, Kings College, Liverpool, Manchester, York.
Many students go on to postgraduate entry medical or dental courses. The Medical Sciences degree is also attractive to those who envisage careers related to healthcare or medical research. On this course you have the opportunity to apply to spend time abroad, usually as an extra academic year. If you choose to undertake a study abroad option, you will spend the fourth year of the MBiol studying abroad. This will extend your studies by 12 months.
Work placements
Practical work experience can help you decide on your career and improve your employability. On this course you have the option to apply to take a placement year module with organisations across the public, private and voluntary sectors in the UK, or overseas.

We have a dedicated Employability Officer in the Faculty of Biological Sciences who works closely with the University's Careers Centre. We offer a host of additional opportunities beyond core course content, including volunteering and placements. We also organise regular careers workshops designed specifically for sport sciences students to develop their career opportunities. These include our annual Bioscience Networking Event, which gives you the chance to meet bioscience employers, speak to alumni, attend workshops and get masses of information.
