About The University of Law at Exeter, LLM, MA, PGDL - at University of Exeter Law School

Thanks to an innovative collaboration with The University of Law (ULaw), students can convert to law by studying their range of conversion courses and continue their journey to becoming a solicitor by studying ULaw's Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE) course.

The University of Law will be responsible for providing the educational content of both programmes, which includes face-to-face teaching from qualified lawyers, tutor support and an award-winning employability programme to boost workplace skills. Students will also benefit from the campus experience offered at the Streatham Campus whilst studying on their law conversion course, which has recently received £380 million in investment and is known as one of the most beautiful campuses in the UK.

Postgraduate Diploma in Law (PGDL)

ULaw’s Postgraduate Diploma in Law (PGDL) is a law conversion course that teaches you to think like a lawyer and prepare for the realities of life in legal practice. This course replaces our Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and provides the foundation for the pathway into practice for non-law graduates who want to progress onto the SQE1 Preparation Course, and our LLM Legal Practice (SQE1&2) to qualify as a solicitor or the Bar Practice Course (BPC) to qualify as a barrister.

MA Law (SQE1)

The MA Law (SQE1) law conversion course and includes ULaw’s SQE1 Preparation Course, which prepares students for the SQE1 assessments. The course is designed for non-law graduates who want to qualify as a solicitor and gain a legal qualification at Master’s level. With a strong level of support from the start, as well as four weeks guaranteed Qualifying Work Experience (QWE) within our Legal Advice Clinics, this course is a great introduction to law if you hold an undergraduate degree in another discipline.

MA Law (Conversion)

Unlike the MA Law (SQE1) which prepares students for the SQE 1 exam, the MA Law (Conversion) allows you to study a Master’s level qualification and keep your options open by giving you the option of progressing on to study the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) to become a solicitor or the Bar Practice Course (BPC) to become a barrister.

LLM Legal Practice (SQE 1&2)

ULaw’s LLM Legal Practice (SQE1&2) course is designed for graduates who want to qualify as a solicitor using the new SQE route to practice and also gain a Master’s award. We focus on the skills that employers are seeking so that you can enhance your academic knowledge while preparing for the realities of life in legal practice, that’s why you’ll receive four weeks guaranteed Qualifying Work Experience (QWE) within our Legal Advice Clinics. This course will ensure you’re fully prepared for your career as a solicitor, as well as success in the SQE exams.

Student

Albina Sergiyenko (LLB Law with Professional Placement)

“One of the things I really enjoy about my course is how it’s structured. We have a lot of interactive lessons like seminars and workshops instead of just lectures every day. This makes the learning process more engaging and helps us understand the material better.  I’m already excited about my third year because I’ll be doing a placement year. We’ve had lots of workshops on placement years and employability, which have been incredibly useful for developing my job hunting and application skills and understanding the kind of law firm I’d like to work at.”

Student

Erica, from the Philippines, studying LLM Law

“I am currently the Vice President of the Filipino Society and I am proud that I am able to represent my background and heritage at the University. Exeter offers numerous opportunities for us to share our culture, such as the popular Spring Festival celebrations and the ASEAN Spring Ball, which I believe is incredibly important. There is a strong sense of community at Exeter and it is something I truly appreciate while being here.”

“In my first year I lived on campus and shared a flat with six people. I wasn't extremely keen on the nightlife scene so I was a bit worried about what my new flatmates would be like in terms of partying/drinking. Luckily though, my accommodation was a ‘quiet flat’ and a lot of us had similar personalities, which allowed me to settle in quickly and feel more at ease. My entire block only consisted of six flats and we were all really sociable and ended up being very close, and I am still friends with a lot of them now.”

Matt Whitley, Business and Environment student from the UK

Living in Cornwall is an absolute dream. You have outstanding beauty on your doorstep and some of the best beaches in the UK. There is also an amazing heritage and culture in Cornwall. The locals are supportive and passionate about Cornwall. If you show your passion, they can be quite nice to you. At the Penryn Campus, you combine learning in a space of outstanding beauty with opportunities you wouldn’t get at other universities such as sailing and surfing. It is a match made in heaven. It attracts a lot of climate positive, nature focused and outdoorsy people. Growing up in South Manchester, I never really felt like I fitted in. In Cornwall I have found like-minded students from every walk of life that are passionate about the same things.
