What students think about Faculty of Business and Law, De Montfort University

Zenas - Economics and Finance MSc

Testimonial from Zenas - Economics and Finance MSc, student at Faculty of Business and Law

Why did you decide to study at DMU?

My initial decision to study at DMU came as a recommendation from my sister, who had previously been a student at DMU as well. However, I decided to continue my study there because of the relationship that exists on campus between faculty, students and the student union.

What attracted you to the course?

I studied Accounting and Finance BA (Hons) prior to my current course, and I believed that pursuing economics would be a vital investment for myself. This is because the course provided me with an opportunity to broaden my knowledge into Economics and Finance increasing my chances of employment.

What do you think about the staff who taught you and the support you received throughout?

I am grateful to them, they have been a godsend. Their patience and devotion to impart knowledge were so humbling. They were delicate in their approach to ensure that we all understood what was being discussed in class. They also put in place measures to remind us of discussions from previous weeks. More importantly, they were always available for support and share their guidance willingly.

What do you think is unique about DMU?

DMU is all about inclusivity. It is full of people from different parts of the world, and it’s accepting of all ideologies from different walks of life.

Fatimath - International Business and Human Resource Management MSc

Testimonial from Fatimath - International Business and Human Resource Management MSc , student at Faculty of Business and Law

Why did you decide to study at DMU?

I chose to study at DMU because of all the opportunities I saw on offer. Being an international student, I saw that the university had a diverse student population and I was excited to study in a place where I could meet people from different cultures. I was also drawn to the fact that they were awarded gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework which shows that the quality of teaching is very high. Equally important is the fact that I got to meet with an academic and student support staff during a school fair in Nigeria which made me more certain about studying here.

What do you think about the staff who taught you and the support you received throughout?

I was very impressed with how passionate and knowledgeable the lecturers are about the courses they teach. They were also easily accessible and offered support in and out of the classroom, they inspired me to further my learning and believe in my abilities.

How do you feel DMU are preparing you for your career?

DMU is preparing me for my current career by providing a lot of personal and professional support such as one on one appointments that cater to employability skills, I’ve benefited from numerous networking opportunities. There are also a number of academic and non-academic activities that have taught me how to balance a social life with academics and in future, work and social life.

How would you describe DMU's study facilities?

Hugh Aston is one of the newly renovated buildings on campus with modern and easily accessible facilities. There are different classroom settings which I find more accommodating depending on the lecture. There is also a postgraduate
study area which is helpful as it allows students to study quietly right after classes without the need to go to the library.

What do you think is unique about DMU?

DMU is unique in terms of the opportunities it provides its students. It’s very student-focused and aims at improving student experiences through initiatives like DMU Global especially the mass trip to New York, internal and external internships and placement programs. Different types of personal and professional support tailored to a student’s needs, DMU is truly dedicated to their students.

Dennis - Air Transport Management MSc

Testimonial from Dennis - Air Transport Management MSc, student at Faculty of Business and Law

Why did you decide to study at DMU?

De Montfort University is an extremely diverse campus and you are able to interact with people from different backgrounds which is essential in the working world. During my research, I realised the opportunities that were available at the University were endless. This was the moment that I knew DMU was the right choice for me.

What is your favourite aspect of your course?

The best part of the course for me is the level of expertise of both the course leaders and the module leaders. Moreover, the different modules that we are being taught were relevant to the 21st-century aviation era. We also get the opportunity to visit airports in the UK and gain an understanding of what happens behind the scenes for daily operations.

What is student life like on campus and more generally, in Leicester?

There is always something to do for students outside of classes. From the random pub crawls, to karaoke nights to movie nights or a night out on the town. As a foodie, I love the different foods that are available in the Food Village (which is on campus) and at the restaurants surrounding DMU.
