Barcelona is one of the world’s top city brands – and its powerful technological ecosystem is growing in strength. This is due to the attraction that the city has for investors and workers from all over the world, and Barcelona’s growing reputation as a global technology hub. It’s a thriving ecosystem to study business within.
The new ACCIÓ (Agency for Business Competitiveness) report for 2022, endorsed by the Generalitat de Catalunya, points to a 6.3% increase in startups compared to 2021, surpassing the 2000 startups mark for the first time. According to the report, Barcelona is consolidating its position as the fifth startup hub in the European Union, behind only Paris, Berlin, Stockholm, and Amsterdam. Startup Heatmap’s latest rankings place Barcelona even higher – as the 2nd city in the EU behind only Berlin. At this rate it’s not unlikely that Barcelona will get the no1 position from some authority at some stage over the next few years.
Another of Barcelona’s strengths is the investment the city attracts, which reached a total of 1.653 billion euros in Catalonia. Fueled by this investment, startups in the area are making a huge impact due to their proximity to cutting-edge technology sectors. All of these factors have helped the city to be selected as one of the five smartest cities in 2022, according to the latest study by Juniper Research.
Barcelona has three key elements that make it a European benchmark in the field of technological innovation. Firstly, public-private collaboration is high and secures investment. Top-notch specialized talent is also attracted to Barcelona and its growing reputation as a start-up hub. There’s also a commitment from the city’s leaders to position Barcelona at the forefront of the knowledge economy, which includes the development of the 22@ technology district.
The 22@ area of the city is home to technology companies and markets of international caliber, such as Microsoft, Amazon and Cisco. This is also where you’ll find the 22@ campus of the TBS Education-Barcelona. In this triple-accredited business school, students from all over the world study the Bachelor in Management, the Master in Management, and 6 MSc courses, including the Master in Marketing.
Of course, a great place to study isn’t all about business. The warm temperatures throughout the year and the close proximity to both beaches and mountains make Barcelona a dream destination for any student.
The city is also a melting pot of different cultures and nationalities that will make you feel settled, wherever you’re from. Take TBS Education’s Barcelona campus, which offers all its programs in English. It welcomes over 50 different nationalities of students within its walls each year. You can build lifelong personal and professional relationships with a diverse set of people that you might have never expected to meet.
In 2021, the UN identified Barcelona as an example for its ongoing fight against climate change. The report celebrated the initiatives of the Superblocks (areas closed to car access and open to neighbors), green axes, and low-emission zones. Responsible tourism, accessibility, and sustainability are integrated into the city’s heart, promoting healthy mobility. The TBS Education – Barcelona campus is also an example of this. Improving efficiency and energy use is one of the key aims of the sustainable campus, which is equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The campus opened in September 2022 and is now a candidate for LEED and Well certifications, which measure the sustainability and quality of buildings and the well-being of their occupants.
