The programme mission

To shape the future of the professional life of its graduates by offering a programme that is diverse and vibrant in an inspirational learning environment that embeds internationalisation, employability and professionalism in all aspects of its delivery.

Course structure

The following modules are indicative of what you will study on this course.

The first two modules follow on from one another. In Foundations we lay the foundations of project management, like planning, monitoring and controlling, focusing on the more technical skills of the profession. In the Practice module we concentrate more on the behavioural aspects of projects, such as leadership and team work. The two modules together provide a critical overview of the project management world.
The other core modules discuss other aspects of project management such as risk management, scheduling, project finance, strategic alignment and procurement. To complete their studies, all students complete a practical or a research project.

Core modules

An introduction to the project management bodies of knowledge and an explanation of the key technical principles and themes that inform them.

The sociotechnical dimensions of project management (e.g. leadership, teamwork, problem solving, negotiation, politics, quality, change etc.) are critically evaluated using recent publications as a starting point.

The importance of managing risk within a project and a programme environment are evaluated and the main techniques of estimating and scheduling are critically analysed.

The finance skills required by a project or programme manager are exposed and explored and the challenges of procurement in a project environment analysed.

A project dissertation on an approved topic, relevant to the focus of the course. Students are encouraged to use and further evaluate the project management tools, techniques and methods acquired through the taught part of the course. The final project is an important part of the MSc, worth the equivalent of three taught modules. A supervisor is assigned to guide the student into producing a substantive report either about a real deliverable or a dissertation on a current project management research topic, based on the collection of primary data.

The importance of programme management and its fit with corporate strategy is introduced and the challenges of managing programmes and portfolios explored.

Option modules

The module studies the additional challenges faced by international projects from a theoretical and a practical standpoint.

Agile project management methods, originally designed to manage IT projects, are introduced and their evolution into bona fide project management methods explained.

Professional accreditation

Westminster Business School is one of just a handful of universities that's eligible to offer accredited PRINCE2 Foundation and PRINCE2 Practitioner certifications. In addition, the course will provide you with an understanding and an evaluation of a number of other popular professional qualifications, such as M_o_R®*, MSP* and DSDM Atern.

More about me

Dr Nicholas Lambrou

Principal Lecturer

Nick joined the University of Westminster as a post-doctoral researcher in the mid-1980's. He began his teaching career in the School of Computing but has since moved to the Business School, a move that allows him to understand the importance of Information and Project Management both from the point of view of the technically minded person as well as the business user.

Nick has helped to set up higher education programmes in India, the Sultanate of Oman and Uzbekistan. For a time he also managed an import/export wine business and, in the early days of the personal computer, a business that exported PCs to his native Greece. Both these ventures have ensured that his outlook to teaching balances academic knowledge with techniques that offer clear added value when applied to a business environment.

Teaching is my passion and I have taught at all levels from Higher National Diplomas to degrees and postgraduate courses.

Testimonial from Vanessa De Silva, Management Consultant, Expertise Limited, Bermuda, student at Westminster Business School, London
As an international student I was looking for a Master's program that would offer me an experience and education that I could utilise worldwide. The University of Westminster was a simple choice for me knowing the superior level of education, top quality professors and fabulous location offered. The culturally diverse group of classmates held various levels of professional experience which enriched my learning as we continued to develop and challenge each other.

Having completed the MA Human Resource Management specialising in Employee Relations I have acquired an education which lead me to a fulfilling career rather than a short-term job. As a Management Consultant in an Employment Services firm I work with local and international clients and have continued to develop my practical experience in employee relations, policy development, recruitment and performance management.

Andrew Behles, Trainee Chartered Accountant, Nexia Smith & Williamson

Testimonial from Andrew Behles, Trainee Chartered Accountant, Nexia Smith & Williamson, student at Westminster Business School, London
As a US national with relatively little experience in international accounting standards and practices prior to beginning the course, the WBS Msc in Finance and Accounting provided me with a useful blend of accounting theory and practice that has well equipped me for securing a job in international audit in the UK upon graduation. And with up to six exemptions from ACCA exams, its easy to see a quick and tangible return on investment.

Owen Coughlan, RBS Global Banking & Markets
