About Horticulture at University of Reading

This programme provides advanced instruction in horticulture, as preparation for a career in any aspect of the subject, including specialisation in crop production, crop protection, amenity horticulture and therapeutic horticulture. Environmentally desirable production methods are emphasised.

Programme Content
Topics covered, according to option selected, may include: temperate/tropical crop production; technology of vegetable/fruit crop production; nursery stock production and floriculture; greenhouse technology; plant disease management; pesticide application technology; pest management; crop physiology, seed physiology and technology, crop metabolism; tissue culture and micropropagation; developmental physiology of crop plants; crop quality and post-harvest biology; landscape and amenity horticulture; arboriculture; garden design; planting design; social and therapeutic horticulture; landscape ecology and land reclamation; amenity grassland management and weed management.

Visits to commercial and research establishments form an integral part of the programme. These are supplemented by a field programme in which students undertake a tour of sites in the UK. An introductory programme in statistics is provided.

Careers
90% of recent graduates went on to work as horticulturalists in production or government or follow research degrees in horticulture
