About English Literature with Classical Studies at University of Reading

This degree gives you an excellent knowledge of a variety of different kinds of English texts, from a range of periods, and knowledge of Ancient Greek and Roman literature, art, philosophy, and their reception in modern culture, accompanied by perspectives on different methods of critical analysis.This will enable you to choose where you wish to specialise as the programme proceeds.You will develop critical confidence and the ability to express your views orally and on paper, providing you with skills of the greatest value: in recent years, Reading graduates with qualifications in these subjects have embarked upon a wide assortment of careers, including teaching, publishing, journalism, the media, management, administration, and public relations.

Course Structure:
Year 1 introduces you to selected literary texts and topics in English Literature and Classical Studies.It encourages you to ask fundamental questions about the study of your chosen subjects and to familiarise yourself with a variety of critical and theoretical approaches.The second year provides a choice of options in English Literature that enables you to focus more closely on particular periods, genres or thematic traditions;in Classical Studies you will undertake 2 modules, one of which is optional.In the third year, where an extensive array of specialised topics is available in both subject areas, you have the opportunity to concentrate or extend your studies according to your interests.You also undertake research for an English Literature Dissertation on a subject of your own choosing .
