About Master of Business Research at University of Newcastle, Australia

The Master of Business Research is designed for talented mid-career professionals, including academics and professionals in Higher Education, interested in pursuing doctoral studies outside of a traditional PhD, or currently ineligible for entry to PhD studies.

The program is designed to provide graduates with an advanced level of research knowledge and skills in Business, Commerce and Management enabling them to be at the forefront of the latest innovations, developments and opportunities in these fields.

Through the development of critical, analytical and technological capabilities, graduates will be able to apply the theory and methods of business research to ethically research, analyse and evaluate complex data sets. Graduates will develop communication skills that facilitate the effective dissemination of research outputs and outcomes across academic and professional audiences.

The Master of Business Research is a pathway to the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), successful completion of the Master of Business Research provides direct entry to the DBA and may be recognised as an entry to a PhD at the University of Newcastle or other Universities.

What will you study?

The Master of Business Research is offered on a part-time basis over four Trimesters. You can study your MBR online so that wherever you are in the world you can continue to drive your workplace experiences.

The MBR program comprises four 20 unit core courses, a total of 80 units, to be undertaken over four Trimesters. Students must complete all of the core courses to qualify for the degree.

The sequential design of the program assists you to build on your research skills from the foundational knowledge to a research proposal. 

The courses in sequence are as follows:

  • GSBR6101 Foundations of Business Research - 20 units
  • GSBR6102 Literature Review - 20 units
  • GSBR6103 Research Methods - 20 units
  • GSBR6104 Research Proposal - 20 units

    This Master of Business Research provides graduates with the expertise to establish and develop a successful career in research, within the higher education sector in academia or through enhancing the commercial performance of Industry, organisations or the public sector.

    Successful completion of the Master of Business Research provides direct entry to the DBA and may be recognised as an entry to a PhD at The University of Newcastle or other universities.

    Entry requirements

    Entry into the Master of Business Research is available to students who have:

    • an approved AQF level 9 Masters (coursework or research) degree or equivalent with minimum GPA of 5.25 plus a minimum of five years professional experience in a related field of work;

    Additional Requirements

    • a written research outline to be submitted with application;
    • English proficiency requirement of 6.5 IELTS or equivalent as per University policy;

    The following may be required

    • A supervised assessment of comprehension and writing skills, if deemed necessary by the Faculty; and
    • possible interview, if deemed necessary by the Faculty.

    Any exceptions to these criteria will require Pro Vice-Chancellor approval.
