What will you study?

The Master of Medical Statistics offers a practical and rigorous education preparing you for a career as an applied health researcher or qualified medical statistician. We offer two specialisations:

- Clinical Specialisation
- Longitudinal Data Analysis Specialisation

The Clinical Specialisation is focused on applied practice of statistical analysis methods and is oriented towards health professionals and others wishing to undertake applied research. The Longitudinal Data Analysis Specialisation focuses on the mathematical theory of biostatistics that is of particular interest to students already possessing a quantitative degree or appropriate mathematical training and seeking to start a career as a medical statistician.

The program is 8 courses (80 units), comprised of 4 Core courses (40 units), 3 Compulsory courses (30 units) for each specialisation and 1 course (10 units) to be chosen from a Directed course list.

The Core courses are:

  • Foundations of Probability Theory - covers the basics of probability theory and calculus-based methods used in medical statistics.
  • Clinical Trial Design - practical hands on presentation of statistical methods in the design and analysis of clinical trials.
  • Statistical Inference - introduction to basic statistical principles such as variance, estimation, confidence intervals, Type I & II errors and p-values.
  • Linear Regression Modelling - study of linear modelling and its applications to medicine with emphasis on correct implementation, interpretation and scrutiny of results.

Clinical Specialisation Compulsory courses:

  • Computational Statistics/Database Management using SAS Software - state of the art overview of methods for managing and analysing research datasets.
  • Mathematics of Applied Statistics - review of important mathematical concepts and techniques that underlie statistical methods.
  • Categorical Data Analysis and Generalised Linear Models - study of contingency tables and a range of generalised linear models appropriate to count, nominal and ordinal response variables.

Clinical Specialisation Directed courses:

  • Applied Longitudinal Analysis - provides students with the understanding and skills to undertake statistical analysis of longitudinal or correlated data.
  • Applied Survival and Lifetime Data Analysis - presents the fundamental concepts of time-to-event data analysis such as censoring, truncation, survival distributions, hazard functions and partial likelihood estimation techniques.

Longitudinal Data Analysis Specialisation Compulsory courses:

  • Categorical Data Analysis and Generalised Linear Models - study of contingency tables and a range of generalised linear models appropriate to count, nominal and ordinal response variables.
  • Applied Longitudinal Analysis - provides students with the understanding and skills to undertake statistical analysis of longitudinal or correlated data.
  • Applied Survival and Lifetime Data Analysis - presents the fundamental concepts of time-to-event data analysis such as censoring, truncation, survival distributions, hazard functions and partial likelihood estimation techniques.

Longitudinal Data Analysis Specialisation Directed courses:

  • Genetic Statistics and Bioinformatics - provides an understanding of the biological and molecular theory relevant to understanding DNA variation, its inheritance, and relation with measurable traits in humans. A major emphasis is on manipulating and analysing genetic data and correctly interpreting results.
  • Bayesian Methods for Medical Statistics - covers the principles of prior and posterior distributions, Bayes' rule for statistical inference, conjugate and non-conjugate priors, the Gibbs sampler and hierarchical linear models from a Bayesian perspective.
