About Civil Engineering with Project Management at University of Leeds

This course offers you a firm grounding across the breadth of civil engineering, with a focus on the unique project management challenges posed by major building and infrastructure development.

You'll gain an understanding of the technologies and tools available to civil engineers and cover key topics in the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK). You'll choose from optional modules to develop specialist knowledge in topics ranging from transport engineering to the design of structures in earthquake zones. But you'll also gain an understanding of project management to prepare you for a wide range of careers.

All our degree courses allow you to undertake a placement year as part of your degree. If you don't wish to extend your studies by a year, our unique, full-time Faculty Employability team will work with you to find vacation placements in engineering organisations so you don't miss out on valuable industrial experience.

You can choose to take either the four-year Integrated Masters (MEng, BEng) or the three-year Bachelor's (BEng) degree on this course.

You may choose to undertake the International option of this course, allowing you to spend the third year of your MEng at one of our partner universities overseas. You'll study modules similar to those taught at Leeds, meaning your study abroad will be integrated into your degree and will not require you to take a year out. The Faculty of Engineering is continually investing in world-class facilities, and you'll have access to excellent lab facilities, design studio and computing equipment. We also have specialist lab space for structures, materials, public health engineering, building services and geotechnics.

  • Course content

    All degree courses within the School share a common first year of six compulsory modules. These expose you to the diversity within civil engineering and provide a firm basis on which to specialise in later years - as well as giving you the flexibility to switch between these courses.

    In the first two years, you'll gain an understanding of the materials and methods available to civil engineers in different contexts, as well as the basic principles of project management. You'll build skills in structural design and analysis, learn about the properties of a wide range of materials and take part in project work to deepen your understanding. A choice of optional modules in Year 2 will allow you to develop your interests and decide what you might focus on in later years.

    Year 3 involves a wider selection of optional modules, allowing you to gain specialist knowledge in fields such as building physics, railway and transport engineering. Core modules will also cover fundamental areas like foundation and water engineering, and you'll explore techniques for managing time, cost and quality in projects and allow you to complete a substantial research project. Alternatively, if you take the MEng course you can choose to spend this year at one of our many partner institutions in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore or USA.

    If you do take the MEng course you'll continue your studies into Year 4, where you'll contribute to the body of knowledge in a chosen field when you complete an independent research project. At the same time, you'll deepen your knowledge of project management, and choose from masters-level optional modules on topics ranging from designing structures in earthquake zones to strategic management in construction.

    Civil engineers work on projects that combine skills and knowledge to deliver a solution to a client, so we place a strong emphasis on project work throughout the degree. This gives you the opportunity to explore your subject further as well as developing valuable skills in problem solving, design, project management, communication and teamwork.

    Year 1

    Compulsory modules

    • Entry requirements, fees and applying

      Entry requirements

      A-level: AAA including Mathematics (excluding General Studies and Critical Thinking).

      Where an A-Level Science subject is taken, we require a pass in the practical science element, alongside the achievement of the A-Level at the stated grade.

      Excludes A-Level General Studies or Critical Thinking.

      Extended Project Qualification - We recognise the value, effort and enthusiasm applicants make in the Extended Project, and where an applicant offers an A in the EPQ we may make an offer of AAB at A-Level (any required subjects such as Mathematics must still be at grade A).

      All applicants must be studying Mathematics at level 3. For most students, this requirement is fulfilled by achieving the required grade in A-level Maths. Applicants for whom this requirement is to be fulfilled via qualifications other than A-levels (eg BTEC Maths and Additional/Further Maths modules) may be required to take a diagnostic Maths test in addition to their other level 3 maths studies. This is to ensure a suitable level of mathematical literacy.

      GCSE: English Language at grade C or above, or an appropriate English language qualification.

      • Career opportunities

        As with all our courses, there is strong demand for our graduates. When you graduate, you are very likely to find employment in the core contracting and consulting arms of the UK's £30bn per annum civil engineering industry. However, the technical, communication and management skills you will develop during your civil engineering and project management studies are also in particular demand, for example in international finance, investment banking and large project management.

        Careers support

        You'll have access to our dedicated Employability team, located centrally in our Employability Suite, who will provide you with specialist face-to-face support and advice to help you find relevant work experience, internships and year-in-industry placements, as well as graduate positions.

        You'll benefit from timetabled employability sessions, ongoing support during internships and placements, and presentations and workshops delivered by employers. The team also works closely with the University's Careers Centre, which is one of the largest in the country.

      • Study abroad and work placements

        On this course you have the opportunity to spend the third year of your MEng at a university abroad to give you a different cultural perspective on your studies.

        We have links with a number of partner universities overseas which means your study abroad year will be integrated into your degree and will not require you to take a year out. You may choose to study at universities in the USA, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong and Singapore.

        With the help and support of our faculty Employability Team, you can choose to undertake an industrial placement year at one of the 100+ companies that we work with. If you decide to undertake a placement year this will extend your period of study by 12 months and, on successful completion, you will be awarded the 'industrial' variant in your degree title to demonstrate your added experience to future employers.

      • Accreditation

        This course is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators of The Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers, The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Institution of Civil Engineers under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council.

        Accreditation is the assurance that a university course meets the quality standards established by the profession for which it prepares its students. An accredited civil engineering course must meet the quality standards set by the JBM.

        The MEng, BEng is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer.

        The BEng course is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng), and partially satisfying the educational base for Chartered Engineer status (CEng). A course of accredited Further Learning will be required to complete the educational base for CEng.
