What students think about University of Idaho Global Student Success Program (Idaho GSSP)

Berlinda Oluebube Orji, Lagos, Nigeria Graduate GSSP: Chemical Engineering

Testimonial from Berlinda Oluebube Orji, Lagos, Nigeria Graduate GSSP: Chemical Engineering, student at University of Idaho Global Student Success Program (Idaho GSSP)

What is your major and why did you choose this program?

I am currently in the GSSP pursing my master’s in Chemical Engineering. I became interested in studying this
field years ago when I participated in my friend’s fashion show back in Nigeria. She was a designer that made clothing out of recycled materials. I thought to myself that there must be an opportunity to create large-scale textiles out of recycled materials. The University of Idaho had the exact program I was looking for, where I could learn and better understand the polymers and processing necessary to make these materials, and to make
    a real difference.

Why did you choose the University of Idaho GGSP?

I really liked what I heard about the study environment. I was attracted to the small-town feel of Moscow, Idaho
and the safe and friendly community. The GSSP was exactly the kind of program I was looking for to help give
me a foundation in engineering, and to equip me with the skills to be successful.

What is your favorite thing about the University of Idaho and the GGSP?

I love the whole environment, both in and out of the classroom. My professors are so accessible and friendly and are always there to listen and offer support. It really helps motivate me and makes the learning process easier. The people here at the university and in the community are so friendly and kind. Being a part of the GSSP has helped me adjust to the culture here and to better understand what it’s like to be a university student in the U.S.

What would you recommend to future students?

For future students from Nigeria, or anywhere else in the world, I want you to know how easy it is to fit in here.
The GSSP offers great support, from the moment you arrive in Moscow. Don’t worry about all the details or
specifics such as how to settle in. Everything will be explained, and you will feel at home from day one.

What has been your experience so far in the GSSP?

As a GSSP student, I don’t feel any different than any other student at the University of Idaho. I like how I get to
benefit from both the additional support, advising and programming of the GSSP, while still feeling integrated with the entire University of Idaho. And the best part is that I still get to complete my degree in two years, just as a student entering the UofI directly.

Ali Rasheed, Pakistan Graduate GSSP: Electrical Engineering

Testimonial from Ali Rasheed, Pakistan Graduate GSSP: Electrical Engineering, student at University of Idaho Global Student Success Program (Idaho GSSP)

What is your major and why did you choose this program?

I am enrolled in the Graduate GSSP in Electrical Engineering. Since I did my bachelor’s in electronics engineering back home in Pakistan, I wanted to stick
to a similar field for my master’s degree, rather than going for something completely new. Plus, I want to study power engineering in detail so that I can contribute towards resolving the issues of power failure in Pakistan which is a huge concern.

Why did you choose the University of Idaho GGSP?

I feel that the GSSP is the best platform for new international students. It provides an opportunity to students coming from different cultures to settle into the American education system. The best part about this program is that I didn’t have to add extra time to my studies to obtain my master’s degree.

What is your favorite thing about the University of Idaho and the GGSP?

The people here in Idaho are friendly, welcoming and helpful. I didn’t feel as an outsider for long and I got to know people from different cultures and shared our thoughts. Also, the professors are extremely supportive. They are always available for assistance. The main reason that I would recommend the University of Idaho is the GSSP staff. I have never found myself helpless in any situation. The staff are always there for me!

What would you recommend to future students?

For international students who are looking for a university to pursue their master’s in USA, I would highly recommend the University of Idaho. For instance, being a small town, it is much easier to settle in and get to know people quicker compared to a university in a bigger city. The cost of living here in Moscow is much less expensive compared to other cities. And, for Muslim students, there are Halal food options in the university’s food court as well.

What has been your experience so far in the GSSP?

It’s been amazing. The GSSP students are by no means lesser or different to other students in fact no one can differentiate between all the students. The icing on the cake for me in my first semester was that I secured a perfect 4.00 GPA which made my experience even better and worth remembering. For students joining the university in the future, I want you all to know that as soon as you reach the university, you feel that you belong to this place right from day one and I am sure that the GSSP staff will help you feel that.

Teliha Kokuba, Japan Undegraduate GSSP: Theatre Arts

Testimonial from Teliha Kokuba, Japan Undegraduate GSSP: Theatre Arts, student at University of Idaho Global Student Success Program (Idaho GSSP)

I visited the University of Idaho when I was still in high school. My father and I really liked the university and Moscow seemed like a great place for me to study. I like the facilities, the environment and, of course, the people. Everyone here is very kind and helpful and it has been very easy to adapt to life in the U.S.

This is my first time studying abroad. I was a little scared before coming but once I got to the GSSP, the entire staff helped and encouraged me to pursue my passion, which helped me a lot. The GSSP has also helped me
adjust better academically as it is designed for international students, and I can choose classes that I need so I can graduate on time.

I would recommend the GSSP, the University of Idaho and Moscow as it is the perfect size for international students to study and be successful.
