About Computing in Business at University of Huddersfield

These courses provide you with the skills necessary to develop a career as an information systems professional. You will learn about computing, about organisations and, in particular, about what is required to integrate information systems successfully into organisations. Organisations need graduates who understand both computing and business and how to relate one to the other. We offer two versions of our Business Computing courses:- Our BA(Hons) Computing in Business is a specialist degree, which focuses directly upon preparing students for careers such as systems analyst, business analyst, application developer, database analyst, network administrator or user support specialist. All parts of this degree relate directly to business computing. Our combined honours degrees, BSc(Hons) with an option, allow you to focus upon one of a number of optional disciplines that are currently in demand. Although the core purpose and content of these degrees are similar to those of the BA(Hons) Computing in Business degree, you will also be able to develop particular skills in either Software Development, Computing Science or Multimedia. These courses have a common First Year, which means that you can switch courses at the end of your First Year if you wish. Course StructureFour themes run through the degrees. Students gain professional information systems skills - graduates know how to build web-sites, design databases and build business applications. There is also an organisations and people theme. The success of information systems depends as much upon their human and organisational characteristics as upon their technical sophistication. You’ll learn the ‘people’ skills necessary to be a successful Information Systems professional: How to determine what users need; how to manage development projects; how to design appropriate interfaces; and how to deal with the legal and ethical issues that using information systems provoke. The third theme for BA(Hons) Computing in Business students provides an understanding of modern business structures and practices. Combined honours students substitute optional specialisms for the business modules. The fourth theme is our emphasis upon professional development. A series of individual and group projects mirrors the way that you will work in industry. The four themes run throughout year 1, year 2 and year 4. The third year is usually a 12-month supervised work placement. Alternatively, you may opt to progress directly to the final year.
