About Arab and Islamic Studies at University of Exeter

We have strong links with other departments in the University and students have opportunities for cross-disciplinary research in collaboration with relevant programmes in other fields of study. The Institute has strong relations with academic and research institutions internationally, attracting research students from all over the world and many cultural backgrounds. There are frequent public seminar and lecture series featuring distinguished scholars and public figures in related fields from the UK, Europe and throughout the Islamic world.

Four-Year PhDThe Institute offers a Four-Year PhD programme, aimed primarily at students who wish to teach at University level. The Four-Year PhD typically begins with a taught Masters-level course designed to provide you with the methodological skills for advanced research. On successful completion of the Masters degree, you may progress to the doctorate. The second and third years will include further specialist subject training, together with research and the Institute may make available teaching apprenticeships with modest remuneration. The fourth year will normally be devoted to completion of your doctoral thesis.

Applicants for the research programmes are advised to check the research interests of staff and make preliminary enquiries about supervision before making an application. Our website also provides guidelines for preparing a research proposal.
