About Applied Translation Studies in Middle Eastern Language (Arabic) at University of Exeter

This programme provides the methodological and practical skills that enable graduates with expertise in Middle Eastern languages to enter a career in professional translation, electronic publishing or multilingual language technology. Students study translation theory, lexicography, corpus linguistics, and computer-aided translation. As well as providing a sound theoretical base from which to pursue both academic study in translation and a professional career as a translator, theory is balanced by practice, through a strong focus on IT and applied aspects of language technology, allowing you to develop advanced skills in the use of computer-based tools employed in these fields. A core module involves practical study of a specialist subject in the source and target language, normally drawn from business, commerce, politics or social sciences, to enable you to offer this as your field of expertise in professional translation. Initially to be offered to Arabic language specialists, it is planned to extend the range of Middle Eastern languages as resources become available.

Entry requirementsNormally a 2:1 Honours degree or equivalent in a Middle Eastern language (Arabic) from a recognised institution, and an excellent knowledge of English. Non-standard applications are also considered on their merits.
