About Film Studies and Italian at University of Exeter

Film Studies may be studied with French, German, Italian, Russian or Spanish. For details of the Film Studies component, please see the BA in Film Studies. For details of the second subject, including the language requirement and the year abroad arrangements, please refer to Modern Languages.

Year 1

You’ll study two compulsory modules in Film Studies which will enhance your understanding of film as part of a global cultural network: Introduction to Film History and Transnational Cinemas. You will also study a compulsory language module and two modules on aspects of the foreign language culture.

Year 2

You’ll study three core modules (Cinescapes: Time, Space and Identity; Spectacular Attractions: Sensation and Cinema; and Shots in the Dark: American Film in Profile) as well as one or two optional modules (depending on the credit values of the optional modules selected) in Film Studies. From your selected language you’ll study one compulsory language module and two modules on aspects of the foreign language culture other than film (which might mean history, literature, the visual arts or linguistics).

Year 3

Your third year will be spent abroad; there is a range of opportunities for work and study, including, in some of the languages, studying at a university with whom we have an exchange programme (currently Barcelona, Madrid, Rennes and Rome).

Year 4

You’ll study between two and three optional modules in Film Studies (depending on the credit values of the optional modules selected). From your selected language you’ll study one compulsory language module and two modules on aspects of the foreign language culture other than film.
