About Mental Health Nursing at The Open University

Please note that the final enrolment date for this qualification will be January 2020, after which it will no longer be available to new students. You must complete your study by 31 December 2025. Our new BSc (Honours) Nursing (R39) will be available from Autumn 2020, subject to approval by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). If you would like to discuss your options with one of our advisers, please contact us or book a call back.

If you would like to train to become a mental health nurse, and are already working as a healthcare support worker/healthcare assistant, this unique practice-based qualification is for you. It enables you to stay in work while you study - provided you have the support of your employer and suitable practice learning experiences can be agreed. On successful completion of your studies, you'll be eligible to apply for registration as a qualified nurse.

This qualification develops your learning in four main areas:

  • Knowledge and understanding
  • Cognitive skills
  • Practical and professional skills
  • Key skills

The level and depth of your learning gradually increases as you work through the qualification. You'll be supported throughout by the OU's unique style of teaching and assessment - which includes a personal tutor to guide and comment on your work; top quality course texts; e-learning resources like podcasts, interactive media and online materials; tutorial groups and community forums.
