About Health Policy at Swansea University

Exploring the decision-making processes within health services in the UK and abroad, our research work supports policy changes that improve outcomes both for patients and healthcare practitioners.

A PhD in Health Policy gives you the opportunity to pursue your particular personal or professional research interests in this diverse field.

We have specific expertise in finance and service contracting, policy implementation studies, quality systems and public involvement.

Over the course of your studies, you will develop and enhance transferable skills such as problem solving, project management, and critical thinking that are valued in any professional setting.

Recent research projects carried out by our students include purchaser provider reforms, national health insurance system design, the UK private medical insurance sector, and public and patient involvement.

Entry requirements

To apply for the PhD programme you would need to have, or be studying for a Master’s degree, while our MPhil programme requires a first or upper second degree in a discipline related to the proposed research project, or a relevant, approved postgraduate qualification. In some cases, there may be opportunities for MPhil students to continue their studies as a PhD student.

We welcome applications by prospective students from around the world and look for evidence of previous study that is equivalent to the entry requirements stated above. The Postgraduate Admissions Office is happy to advise you on whether your qualifications are suitable for entry to the course you would like to study. If English is not your first language you will need an acceptable pass in an approved English Language qualification to make sure you get the full benefit from studying at Swansea. We consider a wide range of qualifications, including the Swansea University English Test, the British Council IELTS test (with a score of at least 6.5 in each component).

You would be expected to meet the minimum entry requirements indicated above. The College/School reserves the right to ask for higher academic grades and qualifications. Admissions decisions take into account not only prior academic qualifications, but also factors including the standard of the research synopsis/proposal submitted, your performance at interview (if required), intensity of competition for limited places and relevant professional experience (where appropriate).

    People in Swansea live in a close community so you don’t feel left out. You are so much in a part of the family as everyone else is. The student societies are very active in Swansea University and there are a lot of choices to choose from.

    What do you do in your free time?
    I am involved with student body organisation based in London called UKEC (United Kingdom and Eire Council). It's a representative of all Malaysian Societies in the UK and Eire. Am currently the National Treasurer of it.

    What has been the highlight of your time in Swansea?
    Being part of the societies and organized student events for our fellow students here. It has helped me to mingle well with the other nationalities.
