Course description

The objectives of the Civil Engineering programme are:

  • To provide students with a solid background in the design and analysis of civil engineering structures.
  • To build engineering skills of critical importance when working in industry, including the ability to break a complex engineering problem into its component parts, to sketch/model engineering solutions and to be able to understand and prepare technical reports.
  • To build awareness of current design practices through the use of the latest engineering standards (e.g. Eurocodes).
  • To nurture computer modelling skills by encouraging students to develop their own software with the final purpose of analysing realistic civil engineering problems.
  • To build critical awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of different design approaches when facing a civil engineering problem, including aspects such as environmental constraints, economy or health and safety.

Annual tuition fees for entry in the academic year 2017/18 are as follows:

UK/EU International BEng (Hons) Full-time (with a year in Industry) £9,000 £17,450

Fees for full time Undergraduate UK/EU students may be increased in subsequent years of study by an inflationary amount determined by Welsh Government.

Fees for full time Undergraduate International students will increase by 3% for each subsequent year of study.

Entry requirements

The entry requirements of the BEng Civil Engineering (with a Year in Industry) course are:

AAB - BBB at A level (including Mathematics).

Variable offers made dependent on subjects studied and all applications are considered on an individual basis, with GCSE grades, AS Level subjects and grades, work experience, references and personal statement taken into account.

Or 32 at IB to including 5 at HL or 6 at SL Mathematics and 4 at HL or 5 at SL English Language.

Students studying for BTEC qualifications in relevant subjects require D*D*D* - D*D*D, to include B at A Level Mathematics. If they are not taking A Level Mathematics, they must achieve a minimum D in 'Mathematics for Technicians' and D in 'Further Mathematics for Technicians' modules of the BTEC. Students are also required to have minimum two A grades at GCSE, to include a minimum grade B in Mathematics and two other Science subjects.

Students with industrial experience and qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If you have studied access or vocational qualifications, you are advised to apply for the Integrated Foundation Year.

If you are applying for Level Two (second year) entry, in order to be considered, you will need to have already covered the topics offered in Swansea at Level One (first year) in a certified qualification, with a high overall score.
