How you're taught
In your first year, you will spend an average of between nine and eleven hours a week in:
Lectures will build your subject knowledge and understanding, while tutorials and seminars provide the opportunity to discuss issues and ideas arising from your studies. You will also have practical lessons in techniques like makaton. For the remaining 32 hours a week you will be expected to study these areas independently ready to discuss them in your tutorials and seminars.
In Year Two you will have fewer lectures, seminars and tutorials, as you will spend around 200 hours in a placement of your choice.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed on the coursework you do, including:
- case studies
- reflective journals.
What placements will I have?
You will have a six-week placement in your second year. You will have access to an online wiki with details of placements available both within the UK and also further afield. Recent placements have been available with a cricket project in Namibia, an international school in Brunei, an orphanage in Mombasa and an English language project in Thailand.
Where will I have a placement?
You could have a placement in a wide variety of settings: industrial, retail, commercial and public sector. These could include:
- rural, inner city and suburban schools
- hospitals and health authorities
- manufacturing companies
- major sports clubs and grounds in Nottingham
- social services
- local authorities.
The course will also offer opportunities to become involved in a number of paid and voluntary schemes in the education, charity and voluntary sector, enhancing both your professional and personal development.

Opportunities also exist in schools and projects overseas and some of our students have travelled as far as Namibia and Thailand to take their placements.
What does the placement involve?
Placements can cover a wide range of activities from helping children with their reading, to organising sports events or assisting in administrative procedures.
International placements can cover a huge variety of projects. You may find yourself building a school, taking an art class, typing up tests and records, or helping a child read – possibly even in the same placement.

Placements support both your professional and personal development so that you develop key skills that will make you more employable. They help you understand your subject and its application in real work, enhancing your awareness of the psychology of early childhood.
