About Biotechnology at The School of Science and Technology, Nottingham Trent University

On this Biotechnology postgraduate degree you'll examine a range of current topics and their application to macromolecular analysis. It includes optional modules for you to select, depending upon your own interests and aspirations.

What you'll study

The MRes courses are divided into taught elements (60 credit points) and a laboratory-based research project (120 credit points). You will complete the extended research project in one of our highly rated research teams.

  • Modules

    Core modules

    • Research Methods and Bioethics (20 credit points) - This module encourages you to think beyond your own subject, and interact accordingly. You'll gain a solid foundation in literature review, research design and planning, data analysis and a poster presentation by focusing your studies on a related ethical issue. Ethical issues in research will also be explored, as you discover when and how to obtain ethical clearance in accordance with ethical governance at NTU.
    • Research Project (120 credit points) - In consultation with a supervisor at NTU, you'll select a research topic comprising an original, defined research question (or series of such questions), and develop a written research proposal for the Project. You'll then present this proposal as part of the Research Methods and Bioethics module.
    • Working individually with the guidance of supervisors, you'll design your experiments and computer-based approaches to address the research questions. A diary-style record of protocols or methods will be used to generate entries for your skills portfolio.

      You'll communicate your findings through a written thesis, and a poster presentation. For the MRes course, an interim written report and oral presentation will be assessed after six to eight months of work, in order to review your progress.

    • Special Topics in Biotechnology (20 credit points) - You'll study the molecular basis of the approaches used in plant and yeast biotechnology. This knowledge will be used to explore how problems in biotechnology can be solved. In addition, you'll discover the environmental implications that come with using biotechnology. This eLearning module is supported by on-campus workshops.

    Optional modules:

    Choose one module from the following:

    • Business and Enterprise (20 credit points) - You'll approach ideas generation in a creative manner to understand the role of new business concepts, and their development in the biosciences industry. You'll explore all aspects of starting up a new biosciences company, including new product development, marketing and research, pricing, distribution, and promotion.
    • Cell Culture and Antibody Technology (20 credit points) - You'll explore the scientific basis of cell culture and antibody technologies, and assess how they're used to solve problems in biotechnology, molecular biosciences, and biomedical sciences. You'll look at the relationship between cell and antibody technologies, as well as other technologies, particularly recombinant DNA technology and how these may develop in the future.
    • Molecular Biology (20 credit points) - During this module, you'll consolidate your knowledge of the molecular biology of prokaryotes and eukaryotes, and how to prove hoe genomes are mutated, analysed and manipulated in the detection, study and therapy of disease. You'll study the control of gene expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, and the control at transcriptional, post-transcriptional (RNAi, microRNA) and translational levels.
    • Techniques in Macromolecular Analysis (20 credit points) - The aims of this module are to provide an advanced knowledge and understanding of the techniques that can be used to isolate and purify macromolecules, and the approaches that can be used to track, study and predict macromolecular structure and function. You'll explore a range of current topics, and their application to macromolecular analysis. These topics will include the macromolecular analysis of proteins, protein purification programs and simulations, and protein bioinformatics.

How you're taught

This course will be delivered through lectures, laboratory classes, demonstrations, computer packages, and project work. We have state-of-the-art lecture, computing, library and laboratory facilities at your disposal.

Assessment

Taught modules are assessed by a variety of different types of coursework including written assignments, oral presentations, poster presentations, and examinations. The research project will involve the design, implementation and reporting of a major research task as a thesis and presentation orally and / or as a poster.

Careers and employability

The vast majority of students from this Biotechnology Masters course progress onto relevant employment within their chosen field or study for a PhD. This is because they are able to develop extensive knowledge of their subject area as well as vital research skills. This knowledge is further enhanced by the research project which students can develop in their area of interest.

Skills portfolio

You will gather together relevant practical skills throughout laboratory classes producing a training record. This can be presented to potential employers as proof of competence in a laboratory setting. It also provides you with experience of managing what is essentially a personal development portfolio, which is now a standard tool for monitoring progression and performance in a scientific career as well as out in the sector.

What are we looking for?
  • A UK honours degree (minimum 2.1) or higher qualification in a relevant discipline, plus laboratory experience gained through employment or an undergraduate research project.
  • Appropriate experience or other relevant qualifications will also be considered.

    "I had been working in an NHS Haematology/Transfusion laboratory for three years when I came across the flexible Biosciences course at NTU.

    I first heard about this degree through the IBMS website. I was looking for an accredited long distance course and found this was my favourite because of the specialised syllabus and the ability to carry out the modules at my own pace whatever time of day.

    I read about the bursary award for this course on the NTU website. The bursary application was really straightforward and easy to complete. I had to explain my reasons for applying and how I was suitable for the bursary.

    Without financial assistance I believe that I would have found it very difficult to complete this course over the two years and would perhaps have had to prolong my study to be able to manage the payments. Being awarded the bursary was a huge privilege and it has allowed me to concentrate on the course content instead of worrying about finding the next payment, for which I am extremely grateful.

    The course is highly specific to my line of work and attendance will benefit the department by producing a more knowledgeable and experienced member of staff. This will improve both the quality of service and patient experience as well as ensuring my continuous professional development within the NHS.

    My undergraduate research project was concerned with stem cells and the amount of apoptosis that occurs with overnight storage at 4◦C.     "After looking around the university on an open day I was amazed by the quality of the equipment throughout the university on Clifton.

    The BSc (Hons) Exercise, Nutrition and Health degree course allows students to understand up to date, relevant sports science data in a hands-on job related environment with the most up to date equipment.  I  liked the fact that each course module was different, keeping each subject interesting, but with elements that allowed learning to overlap. 

    After finishing my undergraduate course I started looking for Masters Courses. I could not find a university with the same facilities and equipment that would help me achieve in the areas of sports science.  Through my academic career I have developed the ability to apply scientific principles in the design, data collection and write up of nutrition/ physiology research projects.

     All of my lecturers over my four years at Nottingham Trent University helped me with my studies, from drop in sessions, labs and lectures. They also helped me to achieve one publication and funding from the European Hydration Institute to begin research on another.

     Nottingham is a busy city, which is easy to get to and cheap when living as a student and after student life. I am now working for Nottingham Trent University as a Laboratory Technician in CELS.

    During my social time I am also continuing to research within the areas of sports science and nutrition with the help from fellow lecturers to add more published research to my CV.
