About Physics at Newcastle University

Our Physics MRes gives you advanced research skills and knowledge in physics and prepares you for a PhD or a career in a commercial research and development (R&D) environment.

About this course

Our Physics MRes gives you:

  • advanced research skills and knowledge in physics
  • problem-solving skills 
  • quantitative analysis knowledge 

You'll be suitable for the programme if you have a BSc in physics, or a closely related subject such as mathematics, chemistry or engineering.

A major part of the programme is to work within a research group. You'll employ modern techniques and equipment to tackle a problem of fundamental or technological importance.

What you'll learn

Your topic of study will be either experimental or theoretical, in one of our areas of physics research.

Experimental themes:

  • renewable energy
  • photonics 
  • 2D materials and sensing
  • nanoelectronics technology
  • materials for low-cost environmental sensing

  • materials modelling from first principles
  • astrophysics and geophysics
  • quantum fluids and turbulence
  • cosmology and quantum gravity 
  • quantum matter and quantum technologies
  • metamaterials and light-matter interaction

During the taught part of the programme you will gain:

  • advanced knowledge and understanding your chosen area of physics research
  • an understanding of the core principles of research

Depending on your topic, this may include:

  • training in fabrication and characterisation of advanced materials in cleanroom facilities
  • modules in quantum fluids, astrophysics and geophysics, and solid-state physics
  • training in advanced programming and using high performance computing facilities
  • training in experimental analytic techniques such as spectroscopy

You will also receive training in general research skills and principles, and other professional skills.

Entry requirements

 2:1 honours degree, or international equivalent, in:

  • physics
  • mathematics 
  • electrical or electronic engineering
  • a related subject such as mechanical engineering, computer science or chemistry

For the Physics (Experimental), MRes you should demonstrate a strong grasp of solid-state physics and/or relevant experience of experimental physics. 

For the Physics (Theoretical), MRes you should demonstrate a strong grasp of theoretical physics and/or scientific computing.  

We will also consider your application on an individual basis if you have non-standard qualifications and significant, relevant industry experience.

English Language Requirements:

To study this course you need to meet our Band 2 English Language Requirements.

Direct Entry: IELTS 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 5.5 in all sub-skills).
