UK and EU students

A Masters qualification typically comprises 180 credits, a PGDip 120 credits, a PGCert 60 credits, and an MFA 300 credits. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of study provided the course is completed in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

Additional Costs

All of the books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC labs and a laptop loan service. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop. Students may also need to print their assignments and other documents. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop up to £100 for books and printing. Total optional cost: £400

We are a key provider in this field with over 20 years experience.

These are nationally recognised qualifications designed for teachers of children and young adults who are experiencing specific learning difficulties in literacy. They are accredited by the British Dyslexia Association* at Approved Teacher Status (ATS) level or Approved Practitioner Status (APS) in year 1 and Associate Member of the British Dyslexia Association (AMBDA) in year 2.  Exit awards are available at the end of year 1 (PG Cert SpLD) and year 2 (PG Dip SpLD) for those not wishing to take the full master's degree.

Courses are principally designed to enable classroom practitioners gain a high level of knowledge and skill so that they can expertly meet the needs of learners with specific learning difficulties (SpLDs).  

There is a supervised teaching practice consisting of 20 hours one-to-one teaching in year 1 and a further 10 hours in year 2 in order to meet BDA requirements.   There is an additional, mandatory fee of £325 per study year for this which covers the observation and assessment of two one hour lessons, two individual tutorials with AMBDA tutors, and support with report writing and lesson planning via feedback on drafts.

Typical entry requirements

Applicants will normally need to:

*Applicants must have qualified at level 6 - a foundation degree does not meet our entry requirements.

Up to 60 credits can be claimed by teachers who have already undertaken a post graduate award in Specific Learning Difficulties that is BDA accredited at Approved Teacher Status (ATS) or Approved Practitioner (APS) level.

We will also consider applications from professionals in related fields, such as speech therapists, educational psychologists and occupational therapists.

Applicants should clearly state whether they have QTS on their application form as the award given by the BDA at the end of year 1 will be Approved Practitioner Status (APS) not Approved Teacher Status (ATS) for those practitioners.
