How are these costs calculated?

If you do not already have them, you will need to purchase appropriate geographical fieldwork footwear and raincoats at a cost of between £60 and £100. All of the books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC labs and a laptop loan service. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop. Students may also need to print their assignments and other documents. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop up to £100 each year for books and printing.

Placement Costs

How are these costs calculated?

If you are applying through the University-led route, the University will organise your placements - we do not expect you to do this. Starting with the students term time postcode we match this with placement offers from schools. Students are expected to travel up to 1.5 hours each way from where they live and to arrive in their school 45 minutes before the school day commences. Travel by public transport may involve a number of changes e.g. train and bus. We take into consideration special circumstances, such as, disabilities, cultural requirements and medical conditions. In addition, we match carefully to ensure a breadth of experience across different key stages. You will need to budget for travel costs to your placement. You may be able to claim back a contribution if you do not have a bursary or you have to travel over a specified distance set by the Faculty. If you are applying through the School Direct route, the lead school will take responsibility for arranging all practice credit units including placement experiences. You should expect some travel to other schools e.g. for your second placement. You may also need to budget for student membership of professional bodies.

How are these costs calculated?

DBS Checks - Before starting on your course, you must undergo a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service check (Enhanced Disclosure). At the time of going to press, ITET applicants do not have to pay for the first DBS check. If you cannot attend a DBS session at the University before the start of the course, you can use the UK Post Office Document Certification Service, which costs approximately £10. Responsibility for DBS clearance on employment based and CPD programmes normally lies with your employer and not the University. Where a new DBS check is required for placement but not supported by your employer, the University will pay the cost of your first check. If you are not a UK citizen, or if you have lived in one country outside the UK for six or more months in the last five years, you must where this is possible obtain a police clearance certificate from the country in which you resided, in addition to the Disclosure and Barring Service check. You must supply a certified translation if the certificate does not automatically include this. Costs vary and can include fingerprint and translation fees where required. Returning students, who have already had a DBS certificate from Manchester Met and who need a second DBS certificate, for example, due to a suspension of study, are required to pay the DBS fee. The Faculty of Education has a longstanding national reputation for providing high-calibre initial teacher training with over 20 Secondary specialisms available.  We have a well established partnership with over 800 schools and colleges across the North West region and beyond.

Our geography routes into teaching in secondary schools will develop trainees' understanding of school geography through a wide variety of university sessions and school-based learning.  The PGCE views fieldwork as an essential part of school geography.  Trainees will undertake a residential experience in September to consider the management of safe fieldwork.  University based sessions model and encourage critical engagement of the use of new technologies, GIS, thinking skills and enquiry in school geography.

Subject to confirmation of DfE funding, we usually run free, pre-entry Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses for national priority subjects, including Geography. These will be identified at interview for applicants who need support in some areas and confirmed with a PGCE place offer.

A minimum of 120 days school based practice training is combined with university based training and periods of independent study.  Trainees are supported throughout by university and placement mentors.

This course is available via University led and School Direct routes.

We also offer an Assessment-Only route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) aimed at experienced, but unqualified graduate teachers, wishing to complete a formal qualification.

Placement options

School placements are central to the course. As an intending teacher you will begin by developing professional awareness, understanding and skills common to learning and teaching in a variety of settings. You will begin to understand the inter-relationship between the school and its community.

Placements will be in at least two different schools or colleges and will range from inner city to rural settings, mixed and single gender schools, City Academies, Comprehensives and Selective Schools, 11-16, 11-18, sixth form and further education colleges. The Enrichment Phase also offers placements in settings other than schools.

Trainees also have the opportunity to apply for a four week enrichment experience overseas.  These help to develop an international educational perspective and provide the chance to gain some teaching experience in an international school.  Enrichment is in addition to PGCE units of study and opportunities may differ year on year, for example, in 2016 trainees were placed at British International Schools in Kazakhstan, Cyprus or Norway or public schools in Orleans, France.

Career options after the course

This course has an excellent reputation and is highly regarding by employers. Most of our trainee teachers gain employment as specialist geography teachers in secondary schools and many progress to positions of higher responsibility, including department heads.

98.6% of our PGCE Secondary Leavers* were in work and or further study within six months of graduating (Destination of Leavers in Higher Education survey 2014/15.

As part of this PGCE you will gain 60 Masters level credits (one third of a Masters Degree) which can be used as a stepping stone to higher academic and professional awards and career development.

Entry requirements

Typical entry requirements

Degree
Successful applicants will usually hold an undergraduate honours degree awarded by a UK university, or an equivalent higher education qualification. A minimum 2:2 (Hons) degree in a relevant subject such as:  Geography, Urban Studies and Planning, Geography and Economics, Environmental Geography, Geography and Regional Planning, Geography and Regional Management, Human Geography, Aquatic Science, Outdoor Studies, all must have an identifiable level of engagement with Geography modules.

At least 50% of your degree needs to be relevant to Geography.

For exceptional candidates, particularly those with substantial relevant work experience in schools or relevant occupations, we will consider applications from those who hold a 3rd class degree.

GCSEs
You will also need GCSEs at grade C or above in English Language and Mathematics.  However, applicant are able to apply with GCSEs pending for this course and in exceptional circumstances MMU GCSE Equivalency tests may be offered. This will be at the discretion of the admissions tutor and will only be offered if considered appropriate after interview

Experience in educational settings
Prior to applying to Manchester Met, it is valuable to draw upon your experience in different learning contexts. This can be evidenced in several ways, such as time spent in schools or colleges, relevant practical experience in industry, voluntary organisations and other settings.

You should clearly reference this experience in your application and comment on the insights you have gained into the professional teaching role.

Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course

We also offer an eight week Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course during the summer prior to the PGCE course. This allows applicants who may have worked in industry for some time, or who have not covered all aspects of required subject knowledge as part of their degree, to ensure they are up to date with all subject requirements.

Who is this for?

  • - Graduates with degrees that contain less than 50% geography
  • - Career changers who are interested in teaching, but lack up to date subject knowledge in geography
  • - Those with experience within geographical, environmental fields who are thinking about teaching and would like to be updated with school geography.

Other requirements

  • Appropriate post-16 qualifications, A-level Geography desirable
  • An ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English
  • Excellent inter-personal skills.
  • An informed and realistic understanding of the complexities and challenge of teaching in a Secondary school.
  • An understanding of how learning develops within an engaging rich and broad context, with recognition of the contribution made by parents and carers .
  • Personal qualities and abilities appropriate to becoming an effective teacher, including a strong motivation to teach young students, an ability to express personal views with clarity and conviction, to listen and respond appropriately to the views of others, awareness of, and commitment to, issues relating to Equal Opportunities and providing all students with an inclusive learning environment.
  • Intellectual capacity to critically reflect upon experience and personal challenges.
